Gayle Broadbent-Ferris Obituary

Gayle Broadbent-Ferris

Beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend Gayle Broadbent-Ferris passed away suddenly Tuesday evening, October 27, 2009. Gayle loved all small brave creatures. She taught us to take spiders outside rather than step on them. She could reach out and make a connection with anyone, drawing them out of their shell. She had a very strong sense of justice and was never afraid to speak her mind. Gayle was an amazing artist. She loved to create using found and recycled materials. She was always exciting to be around. Every day was always the best day. Every place she explored was always the most beautiful she had seen. Gayle loved the Pacific Northwest. She loved the big trees, the water and the friends she found here. She loved going to the beach for oysters, clams and geoducks. She loved hunting for wild mushrooms. She loved gardening. She loved to find heirloom plants at old abandoned houses and plant the seeds in her garden, and distribute the seeds to friends and family.
She is greatly loved and will be missed deeply by her husband and son, Scott and Jacob Ferris, her family, and friends. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 friends and family are invited to gather at the South Sound Manor, 455 North Street SE, in Tumwater to pay respects and share remembrances of Gayle.

Gayle,
You were the glue,
and
stubborn.

-a poem for my sister who was super

Gayle cared to a fault, a fact that she was unsuccessful at hiding behind her wit and revelatory sarcasm. If you had the honor of being the victim of her sarcasm you were invited to have a good laugh, free of charge, but at your own expense.
She was so worthwhile. I've always admired her. She was a prolific artist and the master of so many mediums. Her skill, productivity and imagination were amazing. She's always made me proud to have her as my sister. She set the bar for me as an artist. I'm only satisfied with my art when I've made something I consider par with her work (I'll keep trying). I love her and will always miss her.

Shake it up girl, wherever you wander! We will all miss the razor sharp wit, short fuse, and rocket launchingly brilliant streak that you have been in our lives! More than anything, I'll miss the way you could string the most amazing words together...Your window flooded my world with brilliance and I am lucky to have known you.

A friend called last night and told us of Gayle’s passing. We talked for quite a while about our memories of Scott, Gayle, and Jacob. It became clear that they are like a part of our family. Like a circle that is gathered around holding us together, and then we realized that Gayle was no longer in the circle. How can that space possible be filled?
As we remember, Gayle was shy, but had a little twinkle in her eye, and a warm smile. She could light up a room. The mysterious way about her caught us off guard at first; it took us awhile to realize that it was her creative nature.
We took a moment last night and went to her website. There were cutouts Gayle dolls, and more dolls to cutout. I thought no way you’d catch me dressing up paper dolls, and then I caught a glimpse of the number of people that didn’t feel silly at all dressing up paper dolls, and I know why, because they are quite artistic, and beautiful.
Please accept our condolences.

I only met Gayle once, but I remember her well. She was like a big streak of magenta down a full white page. --Kim Walters (friend of Gayle's sister, Ardell)

I don't know how to express my sadness at Gayle's passing. She was a wonderful person who made me feel better for having met her. I will forever be in awe of her creativity and spirit. This world is now something a little less without her in it.

Gayle was a force of nature. She was vivid, bright, and passionate about the things and people she loved: her family, art, wilderness, and food. Although Gayle had a marvelous, quick sense of humor, she did not suffer fools gladly. Her honesty was breathtaking.

I am honored to have known her as a beloved niece and exceptional friend.

I remember when Gayle was born and the excitement we all shared in having a baby in the family once again. She chartered the waters for all the cousins who followed. She had a special ability to see for the beauties of life in nature and in art. She used her talents to brighten the world around her. She would create wonderful items out of materials that would otherwise have gone unnoticed by the majority of us. I do believe that Gayle's creativity and talents came with her into this mortal life and will continue to be with her in the post mortal existence that she is now experiencing. In life, Gayle was surrounded by those who loved her. In death, she continues to be surrounded by those who love her. She will not be alone.
