Klaas POST Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jan. 12 to Jan. 13, 2018.
Klaas Post
December 28, 1946 - January 5, 2018
On January 5, 2018, after a long and hard- fought battle with cancer, Dr. Klaas Post, professor emeritus in Veterinary Medicine, at the University of Saskatchewan passed away peacefully in the arms of his family in British Columbia. Klaas was born in Olst, the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1968, where he attended the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph; later moving to Saskatoon and working at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) where he went on to become a full professor. It was here that he met his partner and soulmate, Joanne, whom he married on December 29, 1982. He is lovingly survived by Joanne; their children Jeffrey (Marina) and granddaughter Hannah of Calgary, and Michelle (Amir) of Vancouver; his sisters Nelly (Johan) and Ineke (Alex) of the Netherlands; along with many nieces and nephews of whom he greatly cherished. Klaas devoted his life's work to being a compassionate and accomplished veterinarian. His career of practice, teaching, research and administration spanned over 40 years in Calgary and Saskatoon. Klaas was a dedicated educator and known for his good humor by colleagues and students. Graduates he taught and mentored went on to work in practices across Canada. An especially meaningful accomplishment in his memorable career included being voted WCVM Distinguished Employee of the Year in 2008 and receiving the Merit Award from the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association in 2011. Klaas was an active member of both the soccer and speed skating communities in the Netherlands, southern Ontario and Saskatoon as an athlete, coach, administrator, officiant and volunteer. He had the privilege of coaching many junior speed skaters, some of whom went on to compete in the Olympics. He played for and coached the University of Saskatchewan's Huskie soccer team. He was an enthusiastic supporter of youth soccer, volunteering to coach for any team that needed it, taking his son's team to the Nationals twice and playing himself until the age of 65. He received many honors throughout his sporting life including the Volunteer Recognition Award from Saskatchewan Sports, Inc., Youth Coach of the Year from the Saskatoon Soccer Association, and the Award of Merit from the Canadian Soccer Association. In 2010, Klaas was inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to Saskatoon soccer. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Center, BC Cancer and Irene Thomas Hospice for their care and compassion over the years. A celebration of life will be held for friends and family at a future date in Surrey and Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Klaas's honor to the Saskatoon Cancer Center, the BC Cancer Foundation or the Companion Animal Health Fund at the WCVM.

I just learned that Dr Klaas Post has passed on and I want to express my condolences to his family. I was an intern in the WCVM small animal veterinary hospital in the late 1970's and Dr Post was such a super mentor to me and the other students and intern. What a nice man and such a big contribution to veterinary medicine and sports; I am so sorry he is gone too soon.

I was so very sorry to hear about Dr. Post's passing. I just saw the notice in the Sask alumni magazine. Dr. Post was one of my professor's at WCVM, and I wanted to pass on my condolences.

We had such good times with Klaas in the early 70's at WCVM and then in Calgary. He embraced life and was so comfortable with himself that we were immediately drawn to him and his goodness. Have a wonderful journey Klaas. You will be so missed.

To Klaas's family,

I was a veterinary student at WCVM in late 70's and had Klaas as a teacher in my small animal clinical studies. I appreciated his dedication to the profession and his excellent, laid back approach to teaching his students. He was able to get his point across in a serious manner but knew when to use his excellent sense of humour to make everyone around him feel comfortable.

He was one of my favourite professors at WCVM and I am very sad to hear of his passing. I am sure that he will be missed by his family, friends and colleagues all over the world.

Joanne--It is with sadness that I read of Klaas passing. I was a Vet student in the mid 1970 at WCVM and had the privilege of being taught by Klaas. I enjoyed his humor and patience as well thoroughly enjoyed playing soccer with him. Our relationship continued on through the years as a mentor while I was in private practice. A great colleague who will be missed.

Dear Joanne, Jeff, Michelle and families,
We send our deepest condolences to you all at this difficult time. Andrew had the privilege of having Klaas as a soccer coach for 8 years. During those years we witnessed Klaas's love of soccer and commitment to each and every player in encouraging them to be the best player they could be. But he was much more than a excellent coach. He was a treasured friend, a jovial fellow who loved to laugh and make others laugh, loved animals but most of he was a devoted husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of sorrow.

Post Family,
Mr Post was an extraordinary man. He always had a huge smile on his face and made anyone smile from ear to ear with his roar of a laugh. I fondly remember the times in your family's kitchen where he would pull out his big wheel of cheese out of the fridge and start slicing away. He was always good for a laugh and he was always so kind to us girls:) We were lucky enough to have known him in our lives. We are all thinking of you always and sending our love your way.

I played many soccer seasons with Klaas for Saskatoon United In resent years we had a round of golf together, we had a great day with lots of laughs and we both agreed that maybe we should have stuck with soccer, but that golf was easier on the old body !
Remembering the good times!
R.I.P. Klaas.

Dear family,

Barb and I send our condolences to you. We did not meet, but Klaas was a classmate of mine at the HLS in Holland and we immigrated around the same time to Canada.
Many of the sports activities mentioned in the obituary I remember he was already also doing before he immigrated. Wishing you courage and comfort.

Joanne, Jeffrey and Michelle. We were so sorry to hear of Klaas's passing. We had not heard until today. Klaas had a special way of communicating with people and always managed to make things understood. This was usually accomplished with his wit and humour. He managed many special accomplishments in his life and his family being his biggest. We are thinking of all of you and hope that the memories that you share will help with your sorrow.

Dear Post Family,

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Klaas. I always thought we would meet again and be able to reminisce and laugh about the old days, but sadly it was not meant to be.

I worked with Dr. Post at U of S in the early 70's. He was a young doctor then in the small animal clinic and I worked in the clinic reception. It was a stressful job due to the volume of sick animals but Klaas always knew how to make every day a fun one.

There are some people you meet in your life that you never stop loving Klaas was one of them. Although I haven't seen him in decades, I will never forget him and will always smile when I think of him.

Klaas was a generous, kind and open hearted man who I am so sorry had to leave you all so soon.

May you rest in peace, dear Friend.

Joanne and family my sincerest sympathies for you at this difficult time.We will keep you in out thoughts and prayers

I worked with Dr. Post on various university committees at the University of Saskatchewan. He was thoughtful, helpful, and authoritative, always making decisions in the best interests of the students. He will be missed.
