Sally Brown Obituary

August 21, 1926 - July 28, 2011 Sally Brown, known to many as Mama Sally, passed on peacefully while in the company of family and friends in Fortuna, California on July 28, 2011. Born Sally Ann Penfield on August 21, 1926 in Long Beach, California, Sally led a colorful and active life from the time she was a child when she and her father would swim in the ocean almost daily, to her later years of dancing until dawn. After high school graduation, and prior to her marriage, Sally worked for several years as a supervisor for the telephone company in Bakersfield, California. She eventually retired to devote all of her time to raising her family. Along with her love of music and her passion for dancing Sally enjoyed many years of bowling with her friends in Fortuna. She was an excellent bowler and she had the trophies to prove it. Giving and generous, Sally was always ready to lend a helping hand. Long after her family was raised she willingly accepted the responsibility to care for and provide a loving home for one of her great granddaughters. Camillia Yocom Preciado lovingly remembers the happy teenage years she spent with her special grandma Sally. Even at the age of 84, life was never dull for Sally. One of her favorite pastimes was to play bingo with her friends. She was known as "Lucky Sally." She loved people and those who met her were entranced by the effortless way she made conversation. Sally's family and friends knew she was special. To know Sally was to love her. She had a lighthearted approach to life and rarely let setbacks get her down for long. She spread smiles and laughter. Sally will never be forgotten or replaced. She was our ray of sunshine. Sally was preceded in death by her first husband Richard Lewis and also by her second husband Paul Brown. Her father Clair Austin Penfield and mother Alma Tracy Penfield both passed on in 1986. Sally's brother, John Willard Penfield passed away in 1994. Also preceding Sally in death were her beloved granddaughter Tamara Yocom and Tamara's son David. Sally is survived by a daughter and three sons: Lana (Larry) Williamson of Yakima, Washington; Richard (Wanda) Lewis, William (Rebecca) Lewis, and John (Colleen) Lewis all of Fortuna, California; also eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; and by marriage four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as numerous family and friends that loved her. A viewing will be held at 2:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. on Monday August 1, 2011 at Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, and there will be a Celebration of Life service on Tuesday August 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. also at Goble's Fortuna Mortuary. Dick
I was sorry to hear of your moms passing. I have fond memories of "Mama Sal" as we knew her. She always welcomed us when we were young teens going over to your house at lunch or after when we were in high school. Cherish the memories my friend. Your family is in my prayers.
