Craig Coffey Obituary

CRAIG CARLTON COFFEY was born on March 8, 1953 in Eureka, California, and passed away July 10, 2013 in Port Orford, Oregon, at the age of 60. He is survived by his sisters Janice M. Felt of Eureka, California, and Wenda Jane Coffey of Santa Rosa, California; his nephews Jason D. Robison and his wife Cecilia of Eureka, California, and Jesse R. Smith of Eureka, California; his uncle and aunt Richard and Ardell Coffey of Mesa, Arizona, and their daughter, Lori Beth Shontell of Mesa, Arizona. He is also survived by many other cousins and great-relatives, too numerous to mention. Craig was preceded in death by his parents Carlton and Joanne Coffey of Eureka, California in November 2003; and his brother-in-law Jerry Felt of Eureka, California in January 2003; and his faithful and ever watchful companion, his dog "Snickers" of 10 years, in February 2012. Craig attended local Eureka City Schools, graduating from Eureka Senior High in 1971, then onto Humboldt State University, and the Police Academy at College of the Redwoods. He was self-employed in Real Estate, and was employed by grocery chain stores throughout the years at Bazaar Foods of Eureka, Safeway of Eureka, Safeway in Oregon, and Fred Meyers in Oregon. Throughout the years Craig's interests varied from cars, guns, horses, taking walks with his dog along the lakeside, and keeping up with tradition: his skills in cooking. Craig was lovable and charming with no hesitation to say what was on his mind many times with his joking mannerisms. His last feat of interest was that he completed writing his first novel and was in the middle of writing a second book. The immediate family would like to extend their thanks towards the medical facilities and doctors, for their attention towards Craig, and also gratitude to Deputy McAllister and Redwood Memorial Chapel in Oregon for their expertise and comfort, and also to his best friend Marty Holland of Washington, for helping with some of the expeditings of Craig's household. Craig wished to be cremated and have a very private immediate family ceremony. He wanted his friends, relatives, and those who knew him best to attend a Celebration of Life at 1216 Harris Street in Eureka, California, on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. He just wanted everyone to get acquainted, reminisce about the events they had with him, and have a good ole barbeque with a good cigar and shot of Jack Daniels before saying "God Bless" and "Goodbye". In lieu of flowers, please donate to a Heart Organization of your choice. Only a card and/or your presence would be appreciated at the Memorial Gathering. So sorry to hear about the passing of my good friend Craig.I moved to Roseburg in 2010 and lost touch with him. I have so many fond memories of Craig ~ from the first time he walked into the Real Estate office I worked in with shorts and hiking boots and socks (funny) to the tough times he had when he had heart surgery. He asked me to come to Eugene to pick him up when he was released. He thought my car would be easier to get in and out of and that it would provide a smoother ride but I knew he just didn't want me to drive his pick-up (smiling)...
What a great guy and sense of humor but everyone who knew him already knows that. I remember how excited he was when he was writing his book. He would hand me a transcript and let me read a bit further, asking for my opinion. I enjoyed visiting Craig and Snickers and stopped by as much as I could when I lived closer. I haven't ever given much thought to who I would like to see in heaven but now I know..
I'm definitely going to shout Craig Coffey. Love you Craig. Prayers to his sisters and all those who loved him. Sherrill Ellis-Gray

I am truly saddened to see this. I remember him very well from Eureka High. It was amazing how he could remember movie lines so well. Such a good and gentle man; I will miss him.

We thought of Craig as a good friend. I recall that Plymouth GTX he used to drive. His days as a real estate agent were memorable. I recall looking for him once in Fred Meyers in Brookings. All I had to do was look over top of all the aisles and shelves and sure enough, I spotted Craig. We had many great conversations, some quite recently. I know he enjoyed a good cigar. What a terrific sense of humor, and quick wit. We miss you, friend.

I played a lot of trumpet, and broke more than a few speed limits with Craig. Rest well, my friend.

My heart sunk when I read that Craig had passed. I've known Craig since the late 60's while attending Eureka High School. If there was ever a gentle giant, it was Craig. He was so proud of his green ‘muscle car' and was always the first person to offer my sister and me a ride home from school. We remained friends over the years and he always had a smile on his face when we would meet. No matter how busy he was while working at the Eureka Safeway, he always took the time to visit. I lost contact with Craig some 30 thirty years ago, but one day while shopping at Fred Meyer in Oregon a large man came down the aisle with a big smile on his face. Sure enough it was Craig and once again he took time to ‘catch up'. I offer my deepest sympathies to the family…..I will truly miss him!

It was such a joy and honor getting to know Craig in the last years of his life. I loved his sense of humor and how he always had such a quirky fun way in looking at life. Roasting the turkey on the 4th of July and sticking a flag in it made Craig laugh and enjoy that special roasting pan he had in his kitchen from his mom.
I hope that his book gets published and I will always cherish the time I had with the great Craig C. Coffey.
My love and prayers to Janice, Wenda, Jesse and the rest of Craig's family. He will truly be missed.

Warmly,

My heart goes out to all of you, his family. Craig was a special man, a part of my life in different ways, most recently as an incredible friend. He treated me like a queen, was hysterically funny at times, and someone who I enjoyed re-connecting with, sharing our day's experiences on a regular basis. The thing I will miss the most besides those talks was that instantaneous, distinct laugh and his gentle ways. He had a huge heart, accepted people's frailties, and really wished the best for everyone. Oh, and he could quote ANY line from ANY movie at ANY time :) Whether you wanted to hear it or not :) He was constantly sharing ideas for his latest book, and was so excited about writing. I found a T-shirt for him that rough said "Be careful what you say .. you could end up in my book"! He got a big kick out of that. Just recently I had a surprise birthday party, and it meant a lot to me to find out that he had really wanted to be there. Just knowing that was such a gift. He loved his family so much and cherished family keepsakes more than most people I know. Sweet dreams ... enjoy that romp with Snickers. And know that I'll miss you. Cindy (Bynum Palmer)
