BASIS, James "Jimmy," a longtime Petersburg businessman and restaurateur, died on January 22, 2012 at the age of 74. He was born in Mikro Horio, Greece, and settled in Petersburg in 1959. Throughout his life, Basis owned and operated a number of small successful businesses and restaurants in the tri-cities area, the last landmark of which still stands, Jimmy's Grille, which opened its doors in 1971. He was dedicated to his local community and generous to his church and the greater Greek community. He was a lifelong member of St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church and the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association in Hopewell, both of which he served many non-consecutive terms as president. Basis was also a devout member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Richmond and the Evrytanian Association of America, which assists Greek citizens living in the province of Evrytania, Greece. Above all else, Basis was a devoted family man and is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Frances H. Basis; daughter, Stacy Basis Pappas and her husband, Matthew R. Pappas; daughter, Sandy Basis Holleman and her husband, W. Todd Holleman; granddaughters, Frances Evelyn Pappas, Evelyn Wallis Holleman and Ruth Williams Holleman; and a "special" brother-in-law, Odysseas Housianitis. He is also survived by three sisters, Fotini Zogratos, Vasiliki Zese and Chrysoula Armakas; and several nieces and nephews, all still residing in Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Demosthenis and Alexandra Yousbasis. A Trisagion prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 26, 2012 in St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church, 107 Memorial Drive, Hopewell, Va. 23860, with the Rev. Father Jon Emanuelson and the Rev. Father Nicholas Bacalis officiating. Interment will follow in Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church Beautification Fund, P.O. Box 1204, Hopewell, Va. 23860, or Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund, 30 Malvern Ave., Richmond, Va. 23221. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.

Ms. Frances & Family,

My sincere condolences to you and your entire family in your recent loss. My martial arts instructor (Mr. Louis Clay) and his wife (Kathy) informed me of Mr. Basis' passing just a few nights ago. I was a frequent patron of Jimmy's Grill when I was a civilian government contractor (ITS, Inc) many years ago, and always enjoyed the conversations with you and many of the other patrons. Again, my deepest sympathy to you and the entire family. May GOD's grace comfort you and your family in reflections and celebration of Mr. Basis' life and the lives of so many he has touched within the local communities. GOD bless you.

To the Basis family, we have only been coming into the grill since August of this year, but have come to know and love all of you. There are no words I can say to ease your pain, I know this all too well, because me and my family lost our 21 year old son in a car accident in August. We started coming into the grill shortly after that thanks to a friend of mine. We immediately fell in love with the food, the atmosphere and most of all the warm, loving, friendly people that make up your family and your staff!!! We are so sorry and the best thing we can do for all of you right now is pray and we will be praying for you in the coming minutes, hours, days and months.....death is so hard, but with your faith in God it will be so much easier. With much respect and love, Betty Saye and mother, Becky Menefee

Frances and family, although I have been coming to Jimmy's Grill for a short time, I want to offer all of you my condolences. The Grill is a very special place, and both you and Jimmy welcomed everyone with the same warmth that you would welcome a guest in your home. I will miss Jimmy, but I am confident you will continue business both you and Jimmy have worked hard to establish. I pray that God will surround each of you with His love at this hard time. Jimmy's true legacy or landmark will always be in the hearts of those who knew him.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy in person once, but I heard so many stories from my husband over the years about him. It only took that one meeting to understand that he was a very special man, and I am thankful that I had the opportunity. Keeping your family in my thoughts.
