STROOP, Carson Elwood, 81, of Weyers Cave, passed away Friday morning, October 9, 2009 at his residence. A son of the late Willie Stroop and Maggie Ellen Good Stroop, he was born March 14, 1928 in Harrisonburg. Mr. Stroop graduated from Weyers Cave High School and was State secretary for Virginia FFA. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He was employed as a truck driver for U.P.S. and dock supervisor for Smiths Transfer. He was a committee member and trustee for Camp Overlook, helped organize fall festivals and apple butter making, and was trustee of Naked Creek Cemetery. On April 24, 1948, he married Betty S. Stroop, who survives. Also surviving are four children, Ellen Stroop, of Richmond, Dale Stroop, of Grottoes, Carolyn Moore and husband, Jacques, of Richmond, Jerry Stroop, and wife, Debbie, of Mechanicsville; one adopted daughter, Elaine Sturman of Richmond; four grandchildren, Paul Robinson, Adam Stroop, Corey Stroop and Julia Stroop; two sisters, Neva Barr of Verona and Dorothy Roller of Weyers Cave. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Garnett, Gilbert, Floyd, Roy and Emmett Stroop; and one sister, Dolly Kaump. A graveside service will be held at Naked Creek Cemetery, Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. followed by a memorial service at Bethany United Methodist Church at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Brad McMullen, the Rev. Ron Robey and Pat Lamb officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Overlook, 2587 Martz Road, Harrisonburg, Va. 22802, or to Bethany United Methodist Church, 3700 Lee Hwy., Weyers Cave, Va. 24486, or to Hospice of the Shenandoah, Box 215 Fishersville, Va. 22939.
