Frederick Shashaty Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on May 10, 2009.
SHASHATY, Frederick Joseph, 78, formerly of Palm Coast, Florida and Staten Island, New York, went peacefully in his sleep to be with his Lord and Saviour on May 8, 2009 at his home in Midlothian surrounded by his loving family. True to Fred's attention to detail, he wanted to make certain his final plans and obituary was the way he wanted it. As a result, he prepared the following as his last words and wishes. I would like to thank God for giving me what I call, "THE BONUS YEAR". It was the year that was never supposed to be and I savored each and every day of it to the fullest. However, the time has come for me to say goodbye for now. I want you to remember me in life, not in death, until the time comes that we meet again in the Kingdom of God. Left with cherished memories are his caregiver and son, Raymond Shashaty of Midlothian; his daughter-in-law, Jola; and his grandsons, Raymond, John, Frederick, Thomas and Patrick. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Elizabeth Zarrella of Staten Island, N.Y.; son-in-law, Dominick; and their children, Lisa, Peter and Tara. He is also survived by a daughter, Patricia Valerio; one sister, Janet Contino; one brother, James Shashaty; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Fred served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a very active and dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 20 years. Fred was a Fourth Degree Knight. He had been a Grand Knight, a District Deputy and Faithful Navigator when he resided in Palm Coast. One of his greatest joys over the past year was spending time at the Outer Banks in North Carolina. He loved to watch the sunrise over the marina as he soaked up all its warmth and beauty. No funeral is planned. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. William Coble and the staff of AseraCare Hospice, especially Phyllis Rose, Farah Wulff and Sarah Allen for their unwavering devotion, compassion, care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AseraCare Hospice, 8001 Franklin Farms Drive #206, Richmond, Va. 23229.

How do you say good bye to a GREAT MAN ? He and Your Mom were our first friends when we moved to S.I. We miss her and now we will, also miss him. But the fond and fun memories will remain. We KNOW God will hold them both in the hollow of his hand.
