James Adams Obituary

Published by Bliley's Funeral Home - Chippenham on Nov. 19, 2009.
ADAMS, Rev. J. Herman. In 1918, a very excited couple in Hickory, Ky., rejoiced in the birth of their son, James Herman Adams. During his childhood, his parents nurtured him and directed his path. In August of 1932 at Liberty Baptist Church, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Several years after graduating from Lowes High School in Kentucky, he married Miss Frances Marian Moss on July 29, 1939. They moved to Chicago, where he entered the Moody Bible Institute. Upon completion of his studies there, he was ordained by his home church, Liberty Baptist, on October 25, 1942. He served four Kentucky Baptist churches before entering Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., to complete his formal training. In 1958, they packed their bags and the family journeyed to Richmond, Va., to pastor Bethany Place Baptist Church for 13½years. Feeling led by God, they moved to Powhatan, Va., where he served as pastor of Red Lane Baptist Church for the next 13½years. They then retired on July 1, 1985 and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church in Richmond. Rev. and Mrs. Adams continued to be active in the ministry by serving on several committees at Bethlehem. He had also served as interim pastor for several churches in the Richmond area, as well as in various capacities for the Middle District Baptist Association and Baptist General Board of Virginia. Throughout their 60 years of ministry, Herman and Frances Adams have received many blessings, three of which are their children, Dr. Donald E. Adams, Mrs. Carol Adams Barkstrom and Mr. Robert Adams. They also had eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Rev. Adams was predeceased by his wife, Frances Adams, in 2006. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. Funeral services will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Adams Scholarship Fund, c/o Red Lane Baptist Church, 2095 Red Lane Rd., Powhatan, Va. 23139, or the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 9600 Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond, Va. 23236.

I first met Rev Adams during my first year in college in 1960. I was attending a Methodist Church for Sunday School and would walk two miles (after Sunday School) each Sunday to Bethany Place Baptist for their church service. Rev Adams left an indelible mark on my life … for his caring manner. I have drawn upon what he “gave me” time and time again during the past 49 years. I have no idea how many lives were made different by him … but I know for certain that mine was … and will continue to be.

Dear Carolyn, Bobby & Donald,
There is no way I can express the hurt I know you must feel at the passing of your Father. I did not know of the passing of your Mother until just now. He was a wonderful & faithful Pastor to everyone. You may not remember me because it has been so long since I have seen or spoken to you. My heart certainly goes out to you & your entire family. I met him at the Richmond Memorial Hospital when my precious nephew was there & passed away. He asked was there a minister he could call for me & I told him that I did not have one really because I was a Catholic at the time and he told me, "Frances, I will be your Pastor." That was on my birthday on Sept. 16, 1960. You may remember my precious sister Dot Montgomery who was a member of Bethany Place Baptist. Please take care of yourselves & God Bless Each one of you.

Bobby. It has been years since I talked to you. I met your father at Bethlehem Baptist Church where two of my sons were married. He was a very nice man. Psalm 26 is what he lived by. We are sorry for your loss.

Dear Adams Family,
I know you have great memories of
growing up in the BPBC family. Rev. Adams meant so much to all of us that
were growing up during those years. He
baptized all of the Sanderson children.
As he did many of my friends and their
families. He performed many weddings
including mine. He was "Our Pastor".
I hope you find peace in your memories.
You are in my prayers.

Dear Carol and Adams Family. Oh the fond memories I have of your Dad and Mom as we grew in the Lord as new Christians. Your Dad baptized us there at BPBC on Roanoke St before the move to Providence Rd. Those were happy days that I remember fondly as a young family with a loving church family. We were so blessed and praise the Lord, still are. Keeping you in my prayers, I send all my love. Dale McCollum and Family
