John Goodloe Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 25, 2010.
GOODLOE, John Allan "Jack" Jr., a resident of Urbanna, Va., ended his earthly journey on Saturday morning, April 24, 2010. Jack was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia on March 8, 1924, the son of the late Anne Maury Goodloe and John Allan Goodloe Sr. He grew up in Chester, Virginia. Since his graduation from Chester High School, he attended every class reunion. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He loved his college and regularly attended reunions and enjoyed attending football games, especially between Hamden-Sydney College and Randolph Macon. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Hill Goodloe; his sister, Anne Goodloe Williams; and his brother, Matthew Maury Goodloe. He is succeeded by his wife of twenty-eight years, Marian Wood Goodloe of Urbanna; his daughters, Martha Bolling Goodloe Buchanan and her spouse, Edward "Buck" Buchanan, of Chester, Virginia, Melinda Payne Goodloe Webb and her spouse, Raymond Carroll Webb, of White Stone,Virginia; his son, John Allan Goodloe III and his wife, Carol Camden Goodloe, of Prospect, Kentucky; his daughter, Mary Stuart Goodloe of Chester, Virginia. In addition he is succeeded by his grandchildren, John Allan "Jake" Goodloe IV and Camden Alexandra Goodloe, of Prospect, Kentucky; his devoted sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Goodloe Evans of Urbanna; and numerous nieces and nephews. For many years Jack was very active in St. John's Episcopal Church in Chester. There he raised his family, served on the Vestry and willingly did whatever was needed. After moving to Urbanna, he made his spiritual home at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) where he was an active leader and participant. For many years he was active in the Lions Club of Chester and Kiwanis Club of Urbanna. During World War II, Jack served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. For many years Jack worked in the insurance industry in Richmond where he was a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable on numerous occasions. At the time of his retirement he was an account executive for A.G. Edwards and Sons, Inc. His children remember their father this way: "Dad never met a stranger, and he always put his family first. He led by example. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. His children will forever hold him in their hearts." In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Christ Church (Episcopal), P.O. Box 476, Saluda, Va. 23149. A requiem service will be held at Christ Church Parish in Christchurch, Va. (Route 33 & 638) at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

Melinda,
I,m so glad to have had Jack as a friend in my life. I will never forget his great hug and smile. My Dad had the pleasure of meeting him in the shop one one day when he and Marion were getting haircuts. They set on the bench and talked about the war. Jack took me on a tour of Urbanna once and we ended up in one of his favorite spots--
\the drugstore of course where everyone knew him. Also Meredith had his help often . He took her to the dump! And then there's cocktails in the sunroom at Merediths.Marion and Meredith have many good times to look forward to and I'm certain Jacks' spirit will be with them. Unfortunately all of us will miss that man called Jack!!
Love and sincere thoughts to You
