Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Winchester on Nov. 18, 2025.
Gayle Ann Goodloe of
Winchester, VA passed away Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 79, after a brief illness, at Winchester Medical Center.
Gayle was born May 13, 1946, in Salisbury, MD, the daughter of the late Gaither Boston Aydelotte and Yetive Jane Aydelotte.
She grew up on her parents' farm in Salisbury and graduated from Wicomico High School. She was very active in 4-H and raised her own Shetland ponies. Gayle obtained her bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA in 1968. She was a May Princess in her junior year and the May Queen in her senior year at Madison. She was also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
During the fall of her junior year, she met and fell in love with her husband of 57 years, John Lewis Goodloe III. They were married on April 13, 1968, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury, MD.
Gayle settled with her family in
Winchester, VA in 1979. Throughout her life she volunteered at her children's schools (Powhatan School, Daniel Morgan Middle School, and John Handley High School), Blue Ridge Youth Soccer, UVA Club of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Hawthorne Garden Club for a few years and a longstanding member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church.
Those who knew Gayle would agree that her love for her family, her home, and The University of Virginia ran deep. She was known for her tailgating spreads before home UVA football games (which were featured on the Jumbotron during a game) and for cheering loudly during basketball season. She greatly enjoyed being a hostess and threw annual Virginia Athletics Foundation Spring Socials at her home, as well as her husband's holiday office dinner parties. Gayle and John loved traveling together both in the U.S. and abroad, but they especially looked forward to their summers spent with their family in the Outer Banks, NC. She was always present (with her camera ready) at any and all events that involved her children and, more recently, her grandchildren. She truly loved being Nana.
Gayle is survived by her husband, Dr. John Lewis Goodloe III; daughter, Amy Goodloe Kump (Cyrus) of
Winchester, VA; daughter Jennifer Yetive French (John) of Chattanooga, TN; Katherine Goodloe Henson (Ben) of Fairview, NC; and six granddaughters, Milly, Jane, Hazel, and Elsie Kump, and Breckenridge and Jamie Henson; brother-in-law Jim Goodloe (Carol) of Staunton, VA, and their family; sister-in-law Anne Berggren (Kurt) of Ann Arbor, MI, and their family; sister-in-law Robin Aydelotte, and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brother, David Glenn Aydelotte.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester.
A funeral will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 11:00 am at Braddock Street United Methodist Church.
The private committal service will take place at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Handley Library towards the creation of a new Early Literacy Center on the Handley Library children's floor, a space that holds special memories for Gayle and her daughters and granddaughters. Memorial donations may be dropped off or mailed to any Handley Regional Library location.
