Leroy C. Avent

AVENT, Leroy C., 93, of Emporia, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Newsome Avent; daughter, Gladys A. Powell; two brothers, William and Irvin Avent; and four sisters, Alice Everett, Rosaleen Pollard, Louise Delbridge and Virginia Belle Newsome. Survivors include his children, Judy Sculthorpe of Emporia, Roy Avent and wife, Brenda, of Raleigh, N.C., Richard Avent and wife, Joyce, of Jarratt, and Ann Dimler and husband, Al, of Fairfax Station; grandchildren, Martin and Michael Powell, Teresa P. Higginbotham, Richard Sculthorpe, Ryan, Tim, Steve, Andrew and Karen Avent, Bradley and Mallory Avent, and Erin and Danielle Vacca; great-granddaughters, Kaitlynn Kersey, Madison Powell and Eleanor Avent; one brother, Arthur Avent and wife, Ada Belle, of Capron. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia. The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church in Emporia, with interment to follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.
