Mary LAYNE Obituary

LAYNE, Mary Charles McMackin, known to many as "Charlie," died on November 14, 2009 in Farmville. She was born October 8, 1921 in Dyer County, Tenn. to Charles C. and Addie McMackin. She was educated in the Lawrenceburg, Tenn. school system and, after the beginning of World War II, was recruited to serve in the stenographic corps of the Pentagon. After the war, she lived in Cumberland County, Va., and in Farmville, where she worked for the Virginia Employment Commission, the Virginia Forestry Service, and the Art Department of Longwood College. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Layne Jr., and is survived by her son, Dr. Michael S. Forbes, and daughter-in-law, Janie A. Forbes, of Cumberland County. She is also survived by her stepson, Dr. Thomas N. Layne III of Winchester; her stepson-in-law, Mr. Don T. Morton of Fluvanna County; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Additional survivors are her devoted friends, Mr. Lester Augustin of Wichita, Kansas and Mrs. W.W. Summitt of Farmville. A memorial service will be held at a later time to be announced. She suggested that contributions in her memory be made to the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad or the Hospice of the Hills.
