Mildred Smith Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 30, 2009.
SMITH, Mildred Virginia "Milli," of Mechanicsville, passed away on November 28, 2009 at 77 years old. Milli was born in Fairfax, Virginia on March 27, 1932 to Staley and Verdie Blevins. She is survived by her husband, Vernon Eugene Smith of 54 years, and two devoted daughters, Pam Flippin and her husband, Don, and Donna Bollander and her husband, Bill. She is also survived by her four precious grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Flippin, Jennifer Henry and Ashley Peterson, and one great-granddaughter, Danielle Henry, all from Mechanicsville; a sister, Josie Houston and her husband, Neb, and a brother, Larry Blevins and his wife, Debbie, all of Manassas, Virginia. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, one who was especially precious to her, Tammie Jo Farrell of Alexandria. Milli always had a special place in her heart for Chris and Susan Shaw and was godmother to Sarah Shaw. She held a variety of positions for the government throughout her career and the most memorable role was babysitting the neighborhood children. Milli was a passionate gardener and loved to feed and watch the birds. She was a loving and caring person and a "Best Friend"; she never met a stranger. She will be missed and in our hearts forever. The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by Ronnie Ferraiolo and Diane Powell during Milli's illness. The family will receive friends Monday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. Interment in Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society.

Donna: I am so sorry to hear about your mother. Having had the same experience just this past year, I know how hard it is for you. But as we both know, sometimes we can find blessings in sadness. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
