Peter Marston Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Dec. 6, 2009.
MARSTON, Peter Terrell "Terry," 69, of Greenwood, Va., died peacefully at Mountainside Senior Living in Crozet on October 31, 2009. Terry, the son of Charlotte and Lee Marston, was raised at the Rectory of Emmanuel Church, Greenwood, where his father was rector for over 30 years. He attended Greenwood High School and the Partridge School in Gainesville, Va., was a Boy Scout, and with his lifelong friend, Jimmy Woodson, was an active Explorer Scout. He worked with antiques, especially books, most of his life and established Terry's Treasure Trove in Belmont. He worked at South St. Antiques with his friend Roulhac Toledano, and at many antique sales with his myriad of antique dealer friends. Terry was a fantastic UVA sports fan and attended years of Virginia basketball with Jimmy Woodson. His Richmond friend, Chad Young, drove him to Ogden, Utah, to Ralph Sampson's last UVA game. He also worked at the Green Olive Tree, the Crozet Thrift Shop, and at the SPCA sales with his dear friend, Ponch McPhee. Terry is survived by his sister, Charlotte Jane and her husband, Lloyd Pope; brothers, Minor Lee and his wife, Sylvia, and John Haines Marston; godchildren, Tolee Blow and Kate Marston Cleven; nine nieces and nephews, and countless cousins and friends - especially his many friends at Mountainside who helped him so much. A celebration of Terry's life is to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 12, at Emmanuel Church, Greenwood. The Reverends, Anthony Andres, Charles Mulally and David Wayland will officiate. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Albemarle/Charlottesville SPCA or the H. Lee Marston Scholarship at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria.

Terry was a dear friend and I was so sorry to have to miss his memorial service this past weekend. Memories of Terry range from his calling at 11:00pm to be sure I would be visiting him the next day to calls at 6:30am to see if I had left yet. He was a fun auction buddy - even if we wanted the same stuff. A gracious man who always left you with an "I love you". Never failed to ask after our aging parents and always had something rare or special in hand to tempt me to visit him in Charlottesville and later Crozet. My work became very busy this past 18 months and visits to Terry were rare - but I have Terry with me. Boxes of paper and magazines and books and ephemera of all kinds that I have kept for my retirement. So, as I research and catalog over the next many years - Terry will be at my side.
I feel sure the memorial service was wonderful and I know that Terry was there with you all - I have this wonderful image of Terry giving you all his business card as you entered the church.
Blessings Terry - Ann and I will miss your calls and your gentle caring spirit.

We are deeply sorry for your loss. My husband speaks so fondly of Terry and the Marston family. His memories of growing up so closely with the Marston family always make us smile. (My husband is Doralee's youngest son)
Our prayers are with the family. Terry will be greatly missed.

I am Terry's great niece as his mother, Larle, & my maternal grandmother, Mary Cheape Kidder, were sisters. I have many fond memories of Terry when I was a child he being 13 yrs. older than me & my twin brother, Chris.
I was always amazed at his vast collections of books & trinkets & he never failed to give me a small treasure upon my departure. Terry had a very gentle & loving heart & I'm so grateful to have had him in my life. My spirit & prayers will be with him at the service on Sunday as well as those of my mother, Nancy Kidder Christie, my sister, Julie, & my brother, Chris. My brother, Billy, & Terry have already been reunited in heaven.
Much love to the entire family, Kim Hupfeldt ( Palmetto, FL)

I was recently looking at pictures of our wedding and there are several pictures of Terry. That was 53 years ago. Terry was a very caring person and while I haven't seen much of him in recent years, I have very fond memories of him and his family with whom we had many ties.He will be missed.

I will always remember Terry at the door of Emmanuel Church on Christmas Eve, handing out presents. He gave us some wonderful cook books. He had the sweetest smile! He also would come to see us at Greenhills. Rest in peace, Terry.

Terry was my friend for many years. I left Charlottesville in 2002 and kinda lost touch with him. He supplied me with lots of Charlottesville and Albemarle "stuff" for my collection. We had fun together !! He always told me of his boyhood in Greenwood and the fun times he had at the Recreation center there. I believe his Dad was involved with it at the time. He loved auctions !! He had a vast knowledge of Virginia history and was very proud of his heritage.
Terry, I will miss you buddy !!
