"Mister Sober" was a pivotal force in my senior student days at Hopewell High in 1967. One of the "teachers who made a difference", I found him to be one of my most inspiring teachers, and remember him with great fondness. All of us who had him for our government teacher proudly wrote his name SOBER of the page spines of our class textbooks-- I can remember doing that. He took a personal interest in making us the best we could be, and as a shy and rather unsure-of-myself ,geeky young girl , he made a big difference to my self-confidence. Forty two years late, having carved a successful career as a writer, children's book illustrator and speaker, I can lay a lot of credit for that at Jerry's feet. My condolences and best wishes to his family, and hats off to you Jerry, you are still my inspiration. With love, Lyn Kriegler

Jerry,
Thank you for being my teacher, coworker,
mentor, and most importantly, my close friend. I learned so much from you about life, work, school, and relatioships that I cannot express it all in this format; but I am sure that you know how much you meant to me.
Rest in peace, Jerry, knowing that we all love and miss you.

As a 1970 graduate of HHS Mr.Sober was an excellant teacher, mentor and most of all a friend. Although I havent spoken with him in many years, I am saddened by his passing.

What a blessing Jerry was in our lives. A family friend for many years,he became a beloved teacher and mentor for our three children.Jerry and Carllene sang together in churches, synagogues, and weddings until the Smith's move to Florida in 1982. His life and dedication have been an inspiration and he will be sorely missed.- We love you, Jerry
