Ray Benton Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 15, 2010.
BENTON, Ray T. Jr., 76, of Ashland, passed away November 11, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born July 23, 1934 in Newport News, for over 50 years, he was proud to call Hanover County his home. He was preceded in death by parents, Ray and Margaret Benton, and son, Scott Benton. He is survived by wife, Patricia Benton; daughter, Pamela Gurley (Bill) of Lancaster; son, Wesley Benton (Michelle) of Glen Allen; brother, Dwight Benton of Newport News; stepsons, Philip Smith (Sherry) of Savannah, Ga. and Dr. Michael Smith (Jennifer) of Kenbridge; grandchildren, Macon and Hunter Gurley, Sarah and Allison Benton; and stepgrandchildren, Callie, Graham and Emory Smith. Ray graduated from Warwick High School, attended Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School and received his BA in economics from Randolph-Macon College. He was an enthusiastic member of Tau Chapter, Phi Kappa Sigma, and had many cherished memories of his alma mater and fraternity. Throughout his life, he was an avid participant in sports. He was a stand-out backcourt player in basketball for Warwick High School, N.N. Shipbuilding Apprentice School, N.N. Blue Devils and RMC. He was also an avid fisherman, skier and tennis player, had a deep appreciation for music and had a lifelong love of the Chesapeake Bay where he was fortunate to have a "Rivah" home. During a 40-year career in the financial field, he was vice president with Virginia Federal Savings & Loan, mortgage officer with Virginia First Savings Bank and BB&T. Ray was involved in community service activities, especially those associated with youth sports, and was a dedicated supporter of RMC. Though extended illness changed his usual active lifestyle, he never lost his appreciation for his dear family, RMC sports and the humorous side of life. Most of all he cherished his 10 years with adored wife, Pat. A memorial service will be held in Randolph-Macon Alumni Gym on Friday, November 19 at 2 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Club or Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

I don't have adequate words to describe my sadness when Ray called me a few months ago after he was diagnosed with this terrible disease, and he informed me that it was very serious. It humbles me still that he would think to call an old friend from the past, and his wonderful attitude and love of life and family was the same as all the years we shared together in our work lives years ago. I regret that it is only now that I have learned of his passing. I know he is in a better place, and I know that Ray made many friends and admirers over the years who have passed on or are unaware of his passing. On the occasions where Ray and I talked in the past 25 years, he always expressed love for his family, and in his most recent call he spoke of each person in his family/expanded family, and the joy he felt and love he had for them. The things we take with us from this life are the love we have for others, the truth we have learned, and the good influence and service we have provided for others. Ray was a Good Husband, Father and Friend. What better can be said of anyone. May God's choicest blessings be with Ray and all those who love him.
