Tommy Boyd Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 3 to Sep. 4, 2010.
BOYD, Tommy Vance, of Ashland, Va., passed away September 1, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Anne Sullivan Boyd. He was preceded in death by his parents, Starlin and Susie Crabtree Boyd; and brother, Wheeler Virgie Boyd of Stuarts Draft, Va. He is also survived by numerous family members; and a special nephew, Scott Melton and his wife, Susan, of Doswell, Va. Mr. Boyd served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, and he retired from the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, after serving 43 years. An avid golfer and past member of Hanover Country Club and Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club in Virginia Beach, Va., Mr. Boyd made his third hole-in-one at Hanover Country Club just before being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). The family would like to thank Sarah Stein, Coordinator and Catherine E. Easter, Virginia Regional Director for ALS Association, for their dedication; also, Dr. Johnny Wong of Mechanicsville and Dr. S. Otta Vota with the Department of Veterans Affairs, McGuire Medical Center, Richmond, Va., and the entire staff at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, the Media Home Health and Hospice and the Senior Solutions in Richmond. The summers were spent in Virginia Beach at their home on 40th Street and Oceanfront, with the wonderful and special friends at the "Oceans." In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions to ALS Association, Administration Office, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, Maryland 20855. Burial will be held at Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover, Va. on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Jim Blackwell officiating. Memorial services will be held in Virginia Beach at a later date at 47th Street & Oceanfront, "the Gardens."

Anne, We were so sorry to hear about Tommy today. I knew he was sick but did not know he was that bad. He was such a special person. I have many fond memory's and good times we spend together. We had many a good round of golf. Best wishes to you and you will be in our prayers.

Tommy was a man of quiet reserve who fought ALS valiantly. He never complained or questioned why he was burdened with this disease. His only concern was for Anne.

I am grateful that he allowed me to serve and guide him through ALS and VA system. I am only saddened that I did not know him longer.
