James Stewart Obituary

James C. Stewart
86, of West Lafayette, Ohio, passed away at Coshocton Hospital on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. He was born in Alva, Ky. on April 23, 1925, the son of the late Harry and Ida (Connor) Stewart. He graduated from Black Star High School in Alva, Ky., and then served in the United States Army, Pacific Theatre of Operations, from Sept. 1, 1943 to Nov. 20, 1945. Jim served as Squad Leader in the Americal Division, and was wounded on the Island of Cebu in April of 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart, and Theatre Combat Ribbons. Jim worked for Peabody Coal Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1987, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newcomerstown, Ohio, and formerly served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church in West Lafayette, Ohio.
On Aug. 26, 1950, he married Wilma Jeanne (Fagan) Stewart, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Paula (Timothy) Cheney of West Lafayette, Ohio, Shawn E. (Nanette) Stewart of Tallmadge, Ohio; three grandchildren, Shannon Donley of Newark, Ohio, Nicholas Donley of Coshocton, Sara Rae Cheney of West Lafayette; one step- grandson, Timothy Cheney of Columbus, Ohio; four great- grandchildren, Zachary, Carter, and Dylan Donley, and Kaleah Dreher. Jim was preceded in death by one son, James Thomas Stewart; daughter-in-law, Mary Stewart; great grandson, Cole Eckley; brothers, Harry and Clifford Stewart; and sister, Nancy Stewart Hamm.
A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Given-Dawson Funeral Home, 186 Park Ave., Coshocton, Ohio on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 10 a.m. with Pastors Tom Barber and Don Silverthorne officiating. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery in West Lafayette, Ohio, where the Newcomerstown Veteran's Council will conduct graveside services. The family will greet friends and neighbors at the funeral home in Coshocton, Ohio on Friday, July 8, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. For those who wish contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, River St., Newcomerstown, OH 43832.
