William Johnson Obituary

"Together Again"
William H. "Bill" Johnson
age 89, of Dover, passed away peacefully early Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2011, in Union Hospital at Dover. Born in New York City, New York, June 21, 1921, he was a son of the late Clifford Henry and Adele Nagle Johnson. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Lafayette College in metallurgical engineering. Mr. Johnson retired in the mid 1980's having held the positions of Technical Director, Research & Development Director, and Sales Manager of the Shenango Company overseeing metallurgical operations at all of the company's plants, including the Dover operation where he was headquartered. Prior to his service at Shenango, which began in 1961, he was senior metallurgist at Battelle Memorial Institute from 1956 to 1961, and from 1943 to 1956, he was a metallurgist in the nonferrous unit of the Naval Research Laboratory. Known widely in his profession, Mr. Johnson authored more than twenty-five publications. He acquired five patents covering improvements in foundry practices. He was appointed to serve on the Tuscarawas County Board of Health, and during his tenure on the board, the building which now houses the county health department was planned and constructed. His memberships included Dover's First United Methodist Church, where he served for many years on the finance committee. The American Foundrymen's Society, the Naval Institute, The American Welding Society, and American Society for Testing Materials and the American Society for Metals. Closer to home, where he was known as Bill by his family and friends, he enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and reading.
On June 19, 1943, Bill married the former Erma Dersam. The couple spent more than sixty-five years together before her death Sept. 17, 2008. Survivors include their five children, Brian (wife, Pat) Johnson of Munroe Falls, Ohio, Cliff (wife, Peggy) of Crestview Hills, Kentucky, Sandy (husband, Roger) Winburg of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Beth (husband, David) Gundy of New Philadelphia and Dorothy (husband, Mark) Sheets of Columbus, Ohio. He'll be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Matt (wife, Liz) Johnson, Damian Johnson, Andi (Adam) Henry, Brittany, and Caitlin Johnson, Charissa (husband, John) Theobald, Bethany and Amy Winburg, Benjamin, Aaron, and Kelly Gundy, and William and Sarah Bolin; six great-grandchildren, Connor and Evan Johnson, Abby Theobald, Kensley Henry, Dylan Lyons, and Lucas Winburg, complete the family.
Friends are invited to call Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, from 10 until 10:30 in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where the Rev. Bruce McLaughlin will officiate Mr. Johnson's funeral Service that morning at 10:30. A reception is planned following the funeral service in the hospitality suite at the funeral center. Cremation will follow, and a graveside service is planned Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in Dover Burial Park. Those unable to attend are invited to share memories and condolences with the family by visiting the funeral home's website.
