Albert Fechtel Obituary

FECHTEL Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Albert Thomas Fechtel, M.D. passed away peacefully on January 27, 2012. He will be sorely missed by his six children, their spouses and all of his many grandchildren. Born in Waycross, Georgia on December 4, 1919 to Casper and Bernadine Fechtel, he grew up the eleventh of twelve children, all of whom have predeceased him. Al moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1929 and he graduated from Immaculate Conception High School where he was a standout football player. After a year of working in his fathers Bay Street chicken hatchery, he attended the University of Florida on a ROTC and football scholarship and graduated in 1943. He pursued a medical degree at Tulane University graduating in 1945 and completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA where he met the love of his life, and future wife, Bertha Ann LeBlanc. Al and B.A. returned to Jacksonville in 1950 after his military service where he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He completed his residency in surgery at Duval Medical Center in 1954. Al practiced as an independent general surgeon until the age of 71and was a staff surgeon for six local hospitals. His service to the Jacksonville medical community included many additional roles such as Duval County Medical Examiner, President of the Medical and Dental Staff of Methodist Hospital and team physician for Bishop Kenny football for 10 years. After his retirement from private practice he practiced surgery at the VA medical clinic until the age of 81. He was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and was certified by the American Board of Surgeons. His medical memberships included: The Duval County Medical Society, American Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Southeastern Surgical Congress, Florida Association of General Surgeons and the Florida Physicians Association, Inc. Al will be remembered not only for his skill as a surgeon but also for his genuine care for all of his many patients, his love of his family, his devotion to his church, and his love of the outdoors. Indefatigable, Al always made time to care for others. Al loved playing the role of provider, whether bringing fruit to his patients, taking his medical cohorts on hunting or fishing trips or his family to the beach. He was an exemplary role model for his son Dr. Douglas James Fechtel, who followed in his surgical footsteps. His passion for healing and caring for others inspired several of his children and grandchildren to serve in health care related professions. Al was an active member of Assumption Parish, San Jose Country Club and the Empire Point Community. An avid sportsman, Al will always be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing and his devotion to the Florida Gators. Never big on resting in this life, may he now rest in eternal peace with the love of his life. Uncle Al was amazing. I remember how intense he was about fishing, but really kind and patient as he was teaching me and some of my cousins how to catch St. Johns River fish. I always loved visiting Jax and seeing his big smile. While alot of Fechtels in Leesburg didn't get to see uncle Al often, we sure did admire him!

Al, devoted his life to serving his God, family, country, neighbors, and patients with dedication! Planet earth is a lesser place with the loss of B.A., and now Al. We will always treasure their friendship and memories.

Even though we celebrate Al's life, we extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathy to the Fechtel family!

Dear Fechtel Family,

My parents, Frank & Mary Long, told me today about your dear father's passing. Your Dad was an amazing man. He is especially dear to my father. My Dad often spoke about how it was your father who helped him establish my Dad's OB/GYN practice 50+ years ago in your Dad's old building on Hendrick's Avenue. He says that Dr. Fechtel took him under his wing. My Dad loved going hunting and occasionally fishing with Dr. Fechtel over the years. More recently, they enjoyed speaking together on the phone.

Dr. Fechtel was my godfather.

My parents were not physically able to attend the viewing and funeral, which was a disappointment for them. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

In deepest sympathy on the loss of your dear father.

Doug, your fathers skills were passed into your hands and from those hands came physical healing for myself and my spouse. There are no words for what Dr. Al was able to give and no words of mine will be able to give enough. May gods light shine upon all of you.

Dear Fechtel Family,
Dr. Al will always be remembered to me as the Doctor that still made housecalls. He always checked on me and my brothers on his way home from a hard days work, and that is after your Mother checked on us. Empire Point looked to your parents for guidance in many ways. They truly exemplified the Christian spirit of giving that we should all aspire to have. Both of your parents will always have a special place in my heart.
Special love,
Katherine (Kacey) Andrews

There were many physicians in Duval County but there were none like Dr. Fechtel! My mother had the highest regards for Dr. and when I needed treatment she referred me to Dr. To the Fechtel Family, we would like to express our sincere comdolences in your loss and it has been a joy and pleasure to have been able to share some of the memorial moments of his life. It is my hope that other physician who have met Dr. may have learned from him. Sincerely,
