MARVIN MURPHY Obituary

MURPHY MARVIN BROWN (BROWNIE) MURPHY III Born Jan. 23, 1948. Marvin met the Lord on July 15, 2011. Marvin was born to Mary Katherine Ingham & Marvin Brown Murphy Jr. of Wilmington, North Carolina. Marvin & all those who passed before him were longstanding members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilmington, N.C. In 1960, the family moved with step-father, Phillip Bethea due to relocation with the old Atlantic Coastline Railroad. Marvin attended both Wolfson & Bolles High School. On completion of school, joined the United States Navy. Marvin's father's side received a letter of gratitude in 1967 from the Secretary of United States Navy, thanking the family for their part in three generations of shipbuilding. Marvin's great grandfather, Alfred T. Ingham was recognized in this letter for his having the distinct honor of serving as the Building Superintendent on the HOLLAND, the first U.S. Navy submarine, and for building the only seven-masted schooner ever constructed, the THOMAS W. LAWSON. Alfred's son, James Ingham, was the Superintendent of Construction on the NOURMAHAL, which was William Astor's 232-ft. luxury yacht, which was later used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Marvin's love for the ocean dates way back and was in his genes, blood-line and most importantly, his heart. He spent many hours on his own C-Dory boat, and in life itself, he was the Captain of his own ship. After joining the US Navy, Marvin was accepted & completed a 4 yr. apprenticeship with the I.B.E.W (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Local Union #177 and attained the status of Journeyman Inside Wireman, which he maintained up until his passing. Marvin was a member of I.B.E.W Local #177, Jacksonville Florida, where he served many assignments: Delegate for the I.B.E.W Convention, Health & Welfare Committee, Negotiating Committee and too many more to mention. He was never one to step back from any challenge which would lead to the good of the Union/Brotherhood. Marvin was very active inside the Brotherhood and a well-respected member of the F.L.E, B.E.E & 110 Brotherhood Club. He served as Secretary & Treasurer of the 110 B.C. from 1997 thru 2007, and his letters were full of love, humor, story-telling & above all, Hope for better things to come. In his last challenge, he took on the position of Event Coordinator for N.E. Florida, which involved the Fight for Florida campaign designed to help Florida maintain a degree of dignity for all workers in this great state that he so loved. Marvin was a fine Brother, Father, Grandfather & friend to many, actually too many to list. He was an honorable man who wasn't afraid to stand up for what was right and was an excellent communicator, mediator and story-teller. Marvin wrote two books & was on his third prior to passing. These books were full of stories of his life & times on the road, as a Traveling Electrician. The First Volume, dedicated to the memory of the I.B.E.W men & women who had passed before him, the Second Volume, dedicated to those who are still out there, fighting the good fight. Marvin leaves behind Beverly Reso Murphy, mother of Demmi Jo Murphy (daughter); Teresa Tennant, mother of Lindsey Murphy Morgan (daughter); and granddaughter, Bella Ann Morgan; Sister, Brenda Murphy of N.Y.C; Sister, Jennifer Murphy Gant of N.C; Uncle, Captain Kenneth & Dorothy Murphy of North Carolina; Cousin, Phillip Gerdes of N.C. A celebration of Marvin's life will be held at 11am on Saturday July 23, 2011 at 966 Liberty St. Jax., Fla. (I.B.E.W Local Union 177). In lieu of flowers, in Marvin's honor, please make donations to the 110 Brotherhood Club @ P.O. Box 674 Roslyn, WA 98941. Donations to be divided equally among the sick & distressed families of the 110 Brotherhood & Local Union #177. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Brownie, such bittersweet news. I met you long ago in the summer of 1965 when we were both young teenagers and stared at each other all summer and admired each other from afar at Topsail Beach, North Carolina. I had a horrendous crush on you, and you had one on me, too, but we were obviously both too shy to do anything about it. You were a surfer and were staying over in Hampstead, NC, with your sister. You would bring your boat over to Topsail and surf at the Topsail Pier during the days (and I would watch you), and then you would come back in the evenings with your friends and play "Don't Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys on the jukebox (one of my favorite songs, too). On my last night at Topsail in August 1965, we finally met on the pier. I never saw you again, but your memory is etched in mine forever. I searched for you the rest of that year and into the next, but we were never able to connect, and you never came back to Topsail. Sweet memories of "what might have been." I pray that you are with the LORD in paradise now. What a beautiful obituary! Love always from your "surfer girl."

Brother Marvin Murphy, I never had the privilege to meet you. From all of the wonderful things I hear of you and all of the many people who think and speak so highly of you, I wish that I would have had the privilege to meet you. I heard once that it doesn't matter where you come from, it matters what you bring to the table. From what I see, you continue to bring to the table even after you have gone. That is the true measure of a man. You are a giant among men. My deepest and sincerest respects to you. My deepest love, sympathy and condolences to Demmi, your family, your loved ones and to all of those who love you. Rest In Peace, Brother Marvin Murphy.

I think I first met Marvin in 73 or 74, I was just a kid but he was always nice to me. He would give me a dollar for ice cream and a pepsi. As I grew up he would give me a dollar as a joke. They sure broke the mold when they made this great man. He loved his family his brothers and the road, and we all loved him. Demmi, we love you! I know your daddy is so proud of you too!

Time just went to fast. So much left unsaid. So much left undone. So many plans I had hoped for. Such an ache in my heart. Brownie would be so proud of his little Demmi doing so many things that he taught her and sharing his wisdom. She's definitely a mind-strong young lady and stands straight and tall. She functions so independently and learned so much from what her father taugh her. She most certainly can fill her father's shoes. Love and Prayers from Aunt Stella and Uncle Grady

Marvin and his daughter Demmi, were very close friends of my Daddy, I.B.E.W. brother James M. Smith (Jim), Local 613, Atlanta, Ga. I met them at the 2009 I.B.E.W. reunion. I was there, with my very sick Daddy, who passed just a few short weeks later of cancer. It was a rough time for my family and me. I spent most of the time I was there, when Daddy was resting, with Demmi and Paul. I didn't get the chance to get to know Marvin very well, but he was a blessing to my family after we lost Daddy. He and Demmi drove from Fla. to Spartanburg, S,C., just to pay their respects and show their love for my Daddy, my Mom, Bonnie and me. That meant so much to me, and I will always remember how supportive they were. Marvin stayed in touch with my mom, and helped her with things she didn't know and understand, concerning final business with the I.B.E.W. He was a good man, and I know my Daddy and my Mom loved him very much! Demmi will always be special to me, for so many reasons. My Mom wanted me to express her sorrow and her regards to you and your family. You have our deepest sympathy! Rest in Peace, Bother Marvin Murphy! Give my Daddy a hug for me. Demmi and I will see you both again one day.

Jerry Brown (another charter member of 15th Ave Surf Club) and I were at a Hatchet Bay reunion in Eleuthera, the Bahamas last year and we were talking about Brownie and what might have happened to him- that both of us had lost contact with Brownie. I was a charter 15th Ave member also and one of the five who went to California in that Summer of '65. Me, Nathan Rudin, August (Auggie) Hepler, David Clampitt and Brownie. Nathan and I had Brownie's new '65 Chevy II smoking while Brownie was out surfing when an Ocean Beach, Calif. cop pulled us over for wreckless driving on Ocean Dr.,right in front of where Brownie was surfing that morning. He saw most everything. No tix but Brownie was pissed. Also, we made it from Jax to Crystal beach Pier in 53.5 hours. On the way west I spotted a bar just over the Louisiana line, 18 year-old legal to drink. Spun that Chevy II at least 2x's round and round tearing into the oyster-shell parking lot at a high rate of speed. Also at 90 mph with me driving in "DRIVE FRIENDLY" Texas, our five surfboards flew off the top- racks and all, landed so high up in a tree that we could not reach them. Some guys in a truck with extension ladders came by, saw our delima and got them down for us. Crazy times. David went first and now Brownie. Was in Jax 7/27 for Nat's birthday and we hoisted a cool-one to Brownie and to David. The trip had five and now there are three- I hope. Does anybody have a line or know where Auggie is? He's the only one not accounted for in this group. God Bless and Rest In Peace Brownie, Keep on Hanging Ten and We'll see you soon enough, Your Buddy Always, HP. (Harry Payne Davis, Jr.)
