MIRIAM ANDREWS Obituary

ANDREWS Miriam B. Andrews, 93, died peacefully on June 14, 2011. She was born and raised on a farm outside of Lake City, Florida on January 19, 1918, the youngest of four children of Max and Shelly Brown. She attended Columbia County High School and moved to Jacksonville where she attended and graduated from Jones Business College. She worked for the Standard Oil Company for many years, and after she retired, was asked to work part time for Walter Dickinson Realty, where she continued her employment for almost 30 years, becoming office manager, and retiring in her early 80s. On May 3, 1941, she married James Herbert Andrews. When he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she followed him to Fort Myers, Florida where he trained as a turret gunner and was assigned to 507 Fighter Group. She continued following him to Biloxi, Mississippi, Dalhart, Texas, Wichita, Kansas and then to Colorado, when he was dispatched to Iwo Shima in the South Pacific, where he remained until the war ended. She was a member of the Riverside Avenue Christian Church for over sixty years, where she served as a Deacon. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and lived a happy and healthy life up until the very end. She was known for making Christmas stockings for family members and friends, with each child's name at the top, and her stockings hang over hundreds of fireplaces each Christmas as a tribute to her memory. She has two sons, James H. Andrews, Jr. (Joey) and William H. Andrews (Susan) and four grandchildren who she loved to babysit, Jamie (deceased), Joe (Maureen), Kirk and Jonathan. She lost her beloved husband, Herbert, in 1972, and never remarried, and in fact, never went on a date, calling Herbert the love of her life. Funeral services will be held at the Riverside Avenue Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. on June 17, 2011, with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Riverside Avenue Christian Church would be appreciated. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
