News Death Notice

POTTENGER, Daniel Joe Was born on December 21, 1950 at Fort Hamilton Hospital, Hamilton, Ohio to Alva and Zedith (Orr) Pottenger. He passed away May 4, 2015 at home many years after being diagnosed with multiple systems atrophy (MSA). Dan graduated from Fairfield High School and The Ohio State University, with a B.S. in Microbiology. Dan worked as a bench microbiologist and supervisor for more than 30 years at Fort Hamilton-Hughes Hospital. He also worked at John Morrell and Co., Procter & Gamble, and Tri-State Clinical Laboratory. Dan retired from laboratory work in 2010. Dan married Debra Kay Hardman on March 18, 1972 and welcomed three children: son, Eric Jeffrey (Tami) Pottenger of Fairfield, daughters, Audra Michelle (Jeffrey) Johnson of Minnetonka, MN, and Carmen Danielle (Mark) Hurst of Maineville, Ohio. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Briannah, Jayden, Claire, Chloe, and Corinne. Dan is survived by his mother, Zedith Pottenger, brothers, Edward (Pamela) Pottenger of Fairfield, Ohio and Richard (Melissa) Pottenger of Concord Township, Ohio, brothers-in-law Doyle (Sandra) Clarkson, James (Deborah) Hardman, and Leroy (Laura) Hardman. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Dan's community activities included Fairfield Little League coach, Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 902, and Hamilton City Schools science fair judge. His many hobbies included camping, woodworking, cycling, and driving his MGB. Visitation will be held, Friday, May 8, 5-8 pm at Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 3950 Pleasant Ave. Hamilton, Ohio. Service will be Saturday, May 9, 10:30 am at the funeral home. Dan will be laid to rest at Arlington Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to www.curepsp.org or CurePSP, 30 E. Wow! Dan you are so dearly missed. I do think of you often when things come up in the lab. I miss your smile, your laugh and all of your medical stories. It was such a pleasure being your manager. Dan was such a kind, giving and intelligent person. He was one of the most knowledgable scientist that I have ever met.
