Glenn AMES Obituary

AMES Glenn J. Glenn J. Ames, age 55, professor, scholar and author, died on October 14, 2010, of cancer. Glenn received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1987. Glenn was a professor of history at The University of Toledo for the past 20 years. During that time he published widely regarded books and articles which were focused on the subjects of early modern Europe and the history of European expansion. He received many awards including a Fulbright grant, fellowships from the American Institute of Indian Studies, the Portuguese Ministry of Education, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon. Dr. Ames has spent more than five academic years undertaking archival research in France, England, the Netherlands, Portugal and India. Glenn's passions in life were, foremost, his children Miranda, age 16 and Ethan, age 14; his work; his colleagues; his travels throughout the world; his joy of cooking and camaraderie with his friends; and his passion for the issues of the world. In addition to his children, he will be sorely missed by his mother, Janet E. Ames, his brothers, Gregory, and his wife, Wendy, and George, and his wife, Debbie, his Rhode Island family and his friends, too many to list, in Toledo, Rhode Island, Portugal and India. He is predeceased by his father, George E. Ames. Friends may visit the family on Sunday from 3 to 8 PM. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., (west of Corey Rd.). A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a charity of the donor's choice. We are very shocked about the passing of Dr. Ames. I enjoyed talking to him at Gesu events, as he loved his children so much and took time to be there for them all the time. My son recently said "I feel so bad for Miranda and Ethan to lose their dad" and nobody knows the right thing to say when something like this happens, but my son knew. Rest in peace and God be with you from the "Gesu" crowd.

Dear Ames family members,

This morning came the shocking news of Glenn's death. We are so sorry, and send you our sympathy. He was my (Ron) friend and colleague....also an excellent scholar and enjoyable to talk with. Among my lighter memories are the NCAA basketball guessing games that he conducted each spring.
Peace and blessings to all of you at this time of Glenn's passing.

Dr. Ames taught the first graduate seminar of my graduate career, and as fate would have it I am blessed to have taken his last class over the summer. Always knowledgeable, challenging yet helpful and above all equipped with an amazing sense of humor, Dr. Ames is an indescribable loss to the U of Toledo history family. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, wishing Ethan and Miranda strength in this unbelievably difficult time. You will be missed.

My "home" for three years was right down the hall from Glenn's office. There wasn't a day he passed my door without stopping in with a warm hello, some mention of his love for his children, and some bragging on the Red Sox. He led me to professional opportunities I would not have found on my own and he supported me every step of the way. He was a wonderful man who will never be forgotten by those whose lives he touched.

Glenn was a fine historian and colleague. I have wonderful memories of visiting historic sites with him in Goa, India, and trading archive stories with him in Panjim. I'm grateful to have known and learned from him. My thoughts are with Miranda, Ethan and the rest of his family.

This is a great shock. My heart goes out to Glenn's family and colleagues at UT. I was a nontrad grad student, just a few years younger than Glenn. He was a very smart, sharp, funny man who made me appreciate economic determinist and Marxist interpretations of history. What a loss. Adieu.

Glenn was my doctoral advisor, mentor, and friend, and he will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and thousands of current and former students. My sympathies and prayers are with his family, especially Miranda and Ethan: Glenn was a wonderful human being, and I am saddened to learn that he was called away so soon. Adeus, meu amigo.

To Glenn's family, and especially his children, I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy. To my colleagues in the history department at the University of Toledo, I wish to extend the same. Like most of you I am in utter shock over this loss. He was a professor of the first rate, and any student is much better off having experienced his teaching, myself included. I will miss his kindness and humor that he extended to me every time he saw me, and to be honest I cannot believe that I will never get to hear him say, "The one, the only, Jim Seelye," again. My prayers and thoughts are with everyone in Toledo.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sorrowful time. I had the chance to work with Dr. Ames as a graduate student at UT, and he was surely one of the finest. He will be sorely missed by everyone that had the good fortune to know him.
