Robert Smith Obituary

(News Article) A longtime winning football and basketball coach at Fremont St. Joseph High School who was business manager and a freshman coach at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Robert D. Smith died Wednesday in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Township. He was 92.

He had congestive heart failure.

Mr. Smith of Oregon retired, officially, in 1983 from Central Catholic, where he was business manager about seven years. He also coached freshman football and basketball and was an assistant to the varsity coaches.

Until this summer, he helped out part time in the athletic office.

"It was his way of life," said his son Mike, a former Central Catholic principal. "I don't think he ever saw himself as retired. He wanted to help out and stay active in education as long as he could."

Mr. Smith was known widely for his tenure at Fremont St. Joseph, where he was head football coach for 27 years and head basketball coach for 22 years. He taught health and physical education and was athletic director.

He closed his career at the school in the mid-1970s and was a charter inductee in 1986 into the school's Hall of Fame. He summed up his philosophy, which was quoted on his Hall of Fame plaque:

"A true athlete, with his God-given talent, will always perform to his maximum for the good of the team, not individual glory," Mr. Smith said for the plaque. "Attributes of that athlete are dedication, desire, and determination to win with humility and lose with dignity."

His football teams had four undefeated seasons, three of those consecutive, and won a dozen Sandusky Bay Conference titles. His basketball teams had 11 conference titles.

"He had the right temperament to motivate athletes when they needed the motivation and to put his arm around them when they needed one-on-one support," said his son, who played for him. "He'd be the first to tell you that his successes were due to the great talent he had in his coaching staff."

Mr. Smith worked on conditioning and fundamentals. Drills were central.

"We ran until we were nauseated, and we didn't make mistakes," said Mike Breier, who played football through the undefeated 1962-64 streak.

Mr. Smith also worked on the players' Christian values. The team was expected to attend Saturday Mass.

"Prayer life was very important to him, and he tried to instill that in his players," said Mr. Breier, a former Central Catholic High School head football coach for whom Mr. Smith was an assistant. "[His] wisdom was often very helpful," Mr. Breier said. "He was a perfect role model for kids. His character was impeccable."

Two of Mr. Breiers' brothers, Fred and Steve - both alumni of Coach Smith's teams - became high school football coaches.

Mr. Smith was a former coach of the year and athletic director of the year of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Other honors included the halls of fame of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, Central Catholic in Toledo, and St. Paul High School, Norwalk, Ohio, where he played football and basketball.

He was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Norwalk to Olive and Don Smith. After high school, he went to the former DeSales College in Toledo, from which he received a bachelor's degree in education. He later received a master's degree from Bowling Green State University.

He taught and coached at his alma mater when he was drafted into the Army during World War. He was a physical trainer for the Army Air Corps and was stationed in California.

His first wife, Ethel, was a history and English teacher at Fremont St. Joseph. Their daughters and son Mike became educators. Son Robert is a physician.

"Faith was always at the center of family and [their] lives," said son Mike, who is dean for the college of education and human services at Lourdes University. "They modeled what it meant to be a Christian and teacher."

He and Ethel married Feb. 14, 1941. She died Jan. 14, 1975.

Surviving are his wife, Eileen, whom he married Aug. 27, 1977; daughters, Carol Belle, Jeanne Kerr, and Sharon Moody; sons, Dr. Robert and Michael; stepdaughters, Lynn Langel and Karen Kitchen; brother, John Smith; 18 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. tomorrow in Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home and from 2-8 p.m. Sunday in Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral Home, Fremont, with prayers in the mortuary at 7:30 each night. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Church, Fremont.

The family suggests tributes to Central Catholic High School in Toledo; St. Joseph Central Catholic High School in Fremont; the Little Sisters of the Poor in Oregon, and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Bob was the most gentle soul I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He always greeted me with a smile and the kindest of words. He was a joy to work with. He wore his pride of and love for his family on his sleeve. Based on our conversations, I know he was truly grateful for the opportunity to watch his grandchildren find their own voices and become the wonderful young men and ladies they are today.

Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless!

Dear Sharon, Bud and Family,
We cherish the fond memories of our years at SJH and your Dad and Mom were a huge part of those days. Your Dad's devotion to God, his family and his career, as well as his code of honor on and off the field was an inspiration to all that were fortunate enough to know him. We will always be grateful that we were among them. We deeply mourn your loss.

Dear Mike and Family:
What else is there to say about your beloved father that hasn't already been said? I don't remember one time in all the 23 years I was at Central Catholic, that he wasn't smiling and in a good mood! He had a way of making people feel special no matter who they were. His love of God, his dedication to his friends, and his intense love for all of you and your love in return, was always evident. What a gift he was! I am glad I knew him.
I know you will find comfort in all of the good memories you have of him.
Rest in peace now dearest, gentle man. Your journey here on earth is over, and eternal reward welcomes you.

Coach Smith helped out with Freshman football when I played in 2001, usually with Special Teams. That puts Coach at the ripe young age of 82 at the time. Coach got a Little too close to the action and was accidentally taken out by a teenager going ful speed, everybody stopped and the practice field was silent. After several seconds Coach got up, helped the player up, and asked if he was alright. Everybody watching nearly fell to the ground laughing at not only this man's unbelievable physical condition but his sense of humor! Hopefully this story can bring a smile to your face in this time of sadness.

Many people remember Coach Smith for athletics but he also was a great teacher. I had him for health class at St. Joe High. It was funny, I remember him saying that his docktor told him that it was better that he smoked than quit. This was the 1970s but again he was still a great teacher. Our prayers go out to his extended family and the St. Joe community. You will always be remembered and most definately missed.

September 30, 2011

My deepest sympathies to all of Coach Smith's family, those were good years together with all our families with our dad's coaching, teaching and doing the things they loved.

I attended Central Catholic from 2007-2011. Whenever I would see Bob in the halls or at an assembly, he would always have the biggest smile. When I played volleyball for Central Catholic my freshman year (2007-2008) Bob would come and watch us practice. He'd always come up to us and tell us to keep up the good work! I appreciated his compassion for his faith and for our school! He was a role model for all he encountered. I am so sorry to hear about his passing. He will truly be missed. Bob, and his family are in my prayers!

September 30, 2011

I too am privileged to have taught at the same school and during the same time as Bob and Ethel. Bob's charisma as a truly GREAT CATHOLIC GENTLEMAN added a SPIRIT TO ST. JOSEPH, FREMONT that will live on forever in the minds and hearts of those touched by Bob's life and spirit! How we looked forward to those weekend games..and Saturday Masses! My prayers and sympathy are with all the members of the Smith family! Sr. Carroll Schemenauer, SND.

Coach Smith will always be the perfect role model on and off the court. My time with him was only a few months, but I will never forget the life lessons he taught to us. When no one else understood how we felt, he was able to articulate his message in a way that meant something to young men despite our immaturity. He had us pray before and after every game thanking God for our chance to compete while understanding that the competition only lasted that one hour, but the lessons of sportsmanship, integrity, and honor lasted our life time. Every person he came into contact with was changed for the better. Coach Smith will be sorely missed by not only his friends and family, but by the community that he touched every time he spoke. Coach Smith lived God's word every day. Thank you Coach.

It has been many years since I lived in Fremont but Coach Smith was always a special part of St. Joe's and the community. He has lived a wonderful life and obviously has left a mark on many people. May you each have lots of wonderful memories that will carry on his legacy and love of sports and family.
