Julia BERNING Obituary

BERNING Julia "Juliette" (Wolinski) Julia "Juliette" (Wolinski) Berning, age 73, of Temperance, MI passed away peacefully on May 19, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 19, 1936 in Toledo, OH, to Thaddeus L. and Scholastica J. (Goinski) Wolinski. Julia was a self-employed Professional Registered Parliamentarian. A devoted wife, proud mother of nine, grandmother (Busia) and great-grand-mother (Pra Busia), she was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Temperance, MI and a longtime parishioner of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral for over 31 years. She attended elementary school at the former St. Teresa School. She graduated from St. Ursula Academy High School (SUA), as well as her 3 sisters, her 5 daughters and one of her granddaughters, and is a member of the Alumnae Association having served as its secretary. Several years ago, she fostered the idea to create the Berning Family Scholarship Fund at Rosary Cathedral, again encouraging her children, and anyone else who wants to contribute, to assist others in need to experience a Catholic education. Her family's Christmas traditions were published in Nuptial Nudge: The Marriage Encounter Newsletter of Northwestern Ohio as an example of how family traditions can keep family together. She has also been a leader for the Christian Family Movement (CFM), serving at one time as State co-president. She was a local leader for the former Large Families of America. With the Girl Scouts of America, as a lifetime member, leader, volunteer administrator, and as the parent of five girl scouts, she was the 1994 recipient of the Maumee Valley Girl Scout Council Thanks Badge. Julia was a moderator of several political debates, both televised and non-televised. She had served on numerous political Executive Boards and had been Chairperson of various committees, including president of and editor for the Toledo-Lucas County League of Women Voters and president of the Republican Women's Club of Monroe County. Her entrepreneurial flair was also demonstrated with her successes in Amway Global, which includes the family being featured in a professionally produced marketing training film (Universal Studios/Amway Corporation, Portraits of Success, 1974), which has been translated and shown internationally. Audrey, Fred and Family: Julia was an incredible inspiration to me starting with the Pedante Toastmistress club where she taught me parlimentary procedures that I have used throughout my career on various committees. She treated me like one of her own and opened her home to me like family. The Berning clan is one of the finest I know, and I wish to express my deepest sympathies to you all.

To the Berning family:
Our condolences on the passing of Julia. She was such a kind and thoughtful person. I still remember looking forward to receiving the card and gift she sent each birthday. I will also have fond memories of talking to Julia at the family reunion each summer. Each year Julia would make a point of finding my daughter Julia and sharing a moment between the two Julia's. Julia made the world a better place and now she reaps her reward in heaven.

To the Berning family,
It was with heartfelt sadness when I read of the passing of Mrs. Julia Berning. Another loss of an OWE matriarch! I did not realize until after I read the obituary how little I knew about her. What a remarkable woman! What I do recall is how she kept a cool demeanor in front of all of us after discovering another of many "attic " parties. Whether this changed after everyone left is another story! But as anyone of a number of traditional OWE parents will tell you, raising a big family back then was no easy task. She did well!

Dear Fred and Family: Julia leaves a void in the world of parliamentary law that will remain for quite some time. I take comfort in the fact that she has promised to "give me a little pinch on my arm" whenever I am in danger of getting into a parliamentary pickle. I know that she was serious in this offer because I have never known her to renege on a promise.

Julia was a very caring lady and considered a valued friend. I met her through politics however, really got to know her by her love of family and friends. Julia will be missed by so many, but the lessons we learned from her will always be alive and not forgotten. She is someone to be admired and remembered for her kindness, loyality and hard work. Dear Fred and family,
We are sorry to hear of Julie's death and have memories from years ago when she had the energy to tackle it "all"...whatever needed done at Rosary Cathedral and in the Old West End. Our most recent visit with you both was when our sister, dear Margaret Savage died. We always remember you came in support of all of us as we grieved. May this note show our support now for your heartbreaking loss.
