Mark Jennings Obituary

JENNINGS Lt. Col. Mark C. Lt. Col. Mark C. Jennings, age 44, passed away on December 14, 2009, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Mark grew up in rural Ohio as an avid outdoorsman. He was most at home hunting, fishing and trapping the woods, rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes of the northwest part of his home state. At 14 years old he was the youngest bow hunter to bag a buck in that part of Ohio. As a young man he lettered in track and field, raced motorcycles and sailboats, water-skied, snow skied and later in life took up snowboarding. He loved life but most of all he loved his family, his friends, and his country. Mark was a true American hero. Earning a degree from Bowling Green State University in Aero Technology and Air Force ROTC, he earned a commission as Second Lieutenant. He then joined the Air Force to become a fighter pilot. After earning his wings at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX, Mark was sent to Eglin AFB, FL and trained with the Combat Hammer. After this assignment Mark was sent to F-16 training at Luke AFB, AZ and trained aggressively in the deserts of Arizona in preparation for his many missions over the deserts of Iraq. In addition to his fight against dictatorship and terror abroad, Mark flew on September 11 to patrol the skies defending against more possible terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. In Korea, Mark patrolled the no-fly-zone between the North and South from Kunsan, AB in South Korea - defending democracy from the threat of communist aggression. Before leaving active duty in the Air Force to join the Air Guard, Mark spent several years training the next generation of fighter pilots to fly the F-16. He also worked on the F-22 project for a short time while flying with the Texas Air National Guard at San Antonio, TX. Mark's exceptional abilities were recognized early in his career starting with "academic ace" in pilot training at Del Rio. He earned numerous Top Gun awards for his skill as a fighter pilot throughout his career and was highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel, currently serving in the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard at Atlantic City, NJ. After separating from the active duty Air Force, Mark went to work for Delta Airlines flying transatlantic routes to several European destinations and continued training and flying F-16s for the National Guard in New Jersey. On August 23, 2008, Mark married his wife, Captain Emily M. Locke and they settled down in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. They loved the outdoors and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. One of Mark's other passions was buying and fixing homes in the cities where he was stationed including Atlanta, Phoenix, and San Antonio. At one time he owned 5 homes around the country. It was in the loving care and maintenance of one such home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey that this country, that he so loved, lost one of its true, great heroes. Mark was struck down and killed by an automobile while trimming the trees of his front lawn. The senselessness of his death is matched only by brightness with which he shone. Mark is survived by his wife, Emily of Austin, TX; parents, Charles T. and Linda E. of Lambertville, Michigan; sister, Jodi Rozanski; brother, Chris (Stephanie) of Dallas, TX; mother-in-law, Linda Randall; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., (west of Corey Rd.) on Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin with prayers at the funeral home on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. followed a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Joseph's in Sylvania, 5373 S. Main St., at 1 p.m. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very very brightly..."

What a shock as I read about this tragedy in the AF Times. I remember Mark from our time together in AFROTC Det 620, Bowling Green State University. I will always remember him as a down to earth all around good guy. Men like him make America great! My heart felt prayers to his family and close friends. America lost a good man but his legacy will live on in those whom he touched.

I haven't seen Mark in 20+ years, but I considered him a good friend. Mark and I played basketball together for years at St. Thomas and in CYO ball. Although we didn't keep in touch, I can't think of anything more respectable than what Mark did serving our country-- it fit him well. My prayers are with Mark's family during this difficult time. May God richly bless you as He rewards Mark for his service.

My Uncle Mark was the happiest person I knew, and he had the most dangerous lifestyle, too. Rather ironic he died doing yard work after all those years piloting fighter jets. We love you.

Dear Emily,
You do not know me, but I was working at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church the day your husband was killed. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Your husband was taken away from you much too soon and it saddens me and many people in Cherry Hill and surrounding areas the way he died. I am so sorry. My minister was there after the accident and we all were quite upset when we heard that an innocent young man was tragically taken from his family. I know that there is nothing we can say to ease your pain but please know that there are many people from St. Andrew's that care and you are in our prayers. God Bless you and your family at this time of deep sorrow.

It has been so very long since Cardinal Stritch days but I remember Mark was always smiling and so kind hearted. I don't think he ever had a bad word to say about anybody.
We all lose contact after so many years but we never lose our memories. I will remember him dearly especially now knowing how he lived his life so generously and passionately.
My sympathies to Mark's friends and family. We all know he is with God and the Angels above and still watching over us as he did on this earth. Thank you God for this Wonderful Man!

Dear Emily, Mr & Mrs Jennings, My husband and I are so sad that you have lost a dear loved one and the world has lost an incredible man. Greg has fond memories from hunting with Mark. My favorite memory is when Mark and Greg did a fly-by above my hometown, Ft. Thomas, KY Fourth of July Parade. The entire town was in awe of Greg and Mark (except my children who simply thought they were Monty and Daddy). We are thankful that Mark enjoyed Thanksgiving 2008 with us during his layover in Venice. We hope that someday we will meet you in person to share our favorite memories of Mark with you and hear your favorite memories. Emily, it has been years since we've seen you, but Mark always kept us updated on your life. We hope someday our paths will cross again. Your entire family and Mark have been added to our daily prayers. Greg is very disappointed that his job and the distance will prevent him from attending the funeral. Know we will be there in thoughts and prayers.
Love, peace and prayers, Julie and Greg Sarakatsannis

To all of you we send our most heart felt regrets. No words can express the shock and loss you must feel at this time. We the Berrys, all of us, saw Mark grow from a small boy to a man. He was a true delight to all and we knew him. It is not often the boy next door grows up to be a true hero but Mark did. God bless you all and may his memory make you strong now and in the future.

We are in shock of the tragic news of the loss of Mark. We first met Mark at his wedding to Emily less than a year and a half ago. We also spent some time with him on his visits to Emily's family in Maryland. We were greatly impressed with this young man's demeanor, manners, accomplishments and his love for our niece, Emily. Whatta Great Guy !

To Emily and Mark's entire family, we pray for your loss and healing in the days ahead. The days will be tough but God will see you through. Perhaps you can take a little comfort in Philippians 4:8
