Jeffrey SLADE Obituary

SLADE Jeffrey Alan (Jumbo) Jeffrey Alan (Jumbo) Slade, age 70, of Sylvania, OH, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Flower Hospital. He was born in 1941 to Albert Slade and Helen (Madura) Slade in Chicago Heights, IL. He attended St. Agnes grade school and Bloom Township High School, graduating in 1958. He then went on to Kenyon College in Gambier, OH where he earned many honors playing basketball, including the prestigious Mike Gregory Award as The Ohio Conference MVP for 1961-1962. Many years later, he was inducted into Kenyon's athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating from Kenyon in 1962, he was drafted by the NBA and played one year for the Chicago Zephyrs professional basketball team. In 1963, he married Carol Beers from Flossmoor, IL. The couple lived in the Rogers Park area of Chicago several years before moving to Oak Forrest, IL where they spent the next 15 years. He then went to work for Joanna Western Mills in Chicago while attending Roosevelt University at night to earn his MBA degree. From there, he went to Corplan , the management consultant division of IIT Research Institute. His love of travel began here with work in Puerto Rico and Pakistan with stops in Japan, Hong Kong, Kuwait and Lebanon. He developed an interest in finance and the securities business and earned his Chartered Financial Analyst certification. In 1969 he joined The Chicago Corporation where he and two partners developed their Investment Management System. Recruited by Toledo Trust Company, (Trustcorp) in 1984 to run Seagate Capital Management, he and his family moved to Sylvania, OH. As Trustcorp became Society Bank, and later, KeyBank, he elected to start his own company, Slade Investment Management, Inc. and was there until his retirement in 2008. He had been a member of the Investment Analyst's Society of Chicago, the Bond Club of Chicago, The Rotary Club of Toledo, and a Jester. He was a former board member of The Toledo Mud Hens and Meridian National Corp. He was an active golfing member of Inverness Club and had a hole in one on the third hole in 1988. He had traveled to Scotland and Ireland to play the great courses there. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and had taken two world cruises; the first in 2001 with stops in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, India, Dubai among others, going all around Africa, including a safari in Kenya. The second in 2006, down Western Central and South America as far as Lima, Peru, several South Pacific Island groups, New Zealand and Australia. Standing 6'8" tall, Jeff presented a persona that was larger than life, both literally and figuratively. Surviving Jeff are his wife of 48 years, Carol; children, Carson Slade (Coit) Black and Jeffrey (Christine) and three grandchildren, twins Kendall and Connor Black and Vivienne Slade; step- grandchildren, Elizabeth Sabel, Tony Black and Alison Black. Slade Family,
I just heard of your father's passing. I caddied for Mr. Slade for many years. It took a few rounds to get over his towering appearance but it was easy to see he was an exceptional man. I enjoyed being his caddie and it was always a pleasure to caddie in his groups. He always shared life stories and his ideas of lessons to live by. It saddened me deeply to hear of his passing and as I type this I'm recalling a great deal of my many rounds caddying for him. It's because of your father that ill always remember who Thurman Munson was, "A dead Yank!" Or that if you "Ginz" it makes for an easy 2 putt. He always knew he wasn't the best golfer but damn if He didn't know how to kill you on handicap. As he would always say "ole 2 pop shakur!" He brought a lot of comedy, sincerity, and a lot of great memories I will always recall. I hope this message finds everyone in good health and for Mr. Slade may he rest with his creator and I'm sure in heaven he's walking all 18 glorious holes.

I knew your father and husband starting in 1972, when I was invited to play golf with him and some of his friends. The person who invited me to play was John Janes. I don't know why, but Jeff always wanted me to ride with him in his golf cart. His favorite saying in those days when he hit a god shot was "Randolph Street and the Loop, Every Body Out!" I am so happy to see that he had a full life. His golfing friends, including me were always concerned with his then heart problems. I had the pleasure of knowing Jeff for only 12 years, but enjoyed our Saturday golf outings more than any golf experiences I have ever had. I wish all of the Slades well.
