Dan was a good source for family history, and I was happy help with the Houston County basis for his Clan.

I met Dan back in the late 1980s in a restaurant somewhere not far from the twin cities. He interviewed me for his Moriarty clan newsletter. I remember thinking at the time 'what a lovely man' sorry I did not get to know him better.

I am sorry that I was out of the state and missed the passing of Dan Moriarty. For many years we discussed the Moriarty history and the locations in County Kerry that our respective families originated from. I called Dan years ago following my visit to the Caladonia cemetery and found an inscription (Kilconly) on a Moriarty-Kenny tombstone. Someday I hope to track down the missing Blackjack John Moriarty. Dan was such a fine guy.

February 24, 2013

So sorry for your loss of a loved one. Dan was a wonderful person as well a wonderful teacher. Everyone loved him. He was a very well known and loved teacher. He always had a story to share in class. His memories will live on for a long time in all of our hearts. May he rest in peace.

Wow....Mr. Moriarty was a special type of person. He had this spark about him that instantly drew his students to him right from day 1. As a substitute teacher he could walk into a class of strangers and captivate them, make them remember him forever. His true love of guiding students never waned in his career. He was truly kind and fun. To his family, I am sorry for your loss. You were lucky to have this one-in-a-million man in your life.

These are the times I wish we didn't winter in Arizona. We cannot attend your Fathers funeral or be there to hug you and tell you how sad we are and how much he meant to us. I can see you all as little children that I babysat. I loved taking care of you mainly because I was happy that your Dad and Mom could go out once in a while. You were always good kids. Easy to babysit. I think it is fair to say that your Father was one of the most loved teachers that so many of us were fortunate enough to have. He was a wonderful drama coach for our class plays. "Dear Ruth" and "You Can't take it With You." Your Mom was a kind, sweet and gentle woman and such a compliment to your Dad. I still love you kids, even tho it has been forever ago. Love, Judy (Gorman) Scholz

Mr. Moriarty was more than a teacher, and you can tell that through the remembrances others wrote. As a teacher, I can attest to the fact that students BEGGED to have Mr. Moriarty as their 'guest teacher' if I knew ahead of time that I would be gone. What the students didn't always know is how much he taught ME (and many others) as a teacher. Through his encouragement, shared literature, uplifting energy, and his praise, I feel like I grew to be a better teacher. There was absolutely no way to have a bad day when he was around us. I think of you so very often, Dan, and for your family--thank you for sharing him with us for all these years. May he rest in peace.

Dan Moriarty was a friend of my parents, but I could tell Dan and Esther about how I was feeling or what I was doing. He really listened and Esther too. If I was full of malarkey, Dan would look at me sideways. On the whole, he and Esther were very supportive, influential people in my life. I love them and always will.

The Moriarty family
I remember when he first came to Par-Hi. He was young man with a couple of kids. The kids used to come to his classroom after school.
He really knew how to impact ALL OF OUR LIVES! Such a gentle figure. He & your mom were at our 50th (57') class re-union. His personality hadn't changed through all the years, same quiet, gentle person he was the. You have my deepest sympathy, but now he is with your Mom.
Bless you all.

Our prayers are with your family at this difficult time. I'm sure you already know what a blessing Mr M. was, but he impacted so many lives through teaching, including mine. When he would sub in our classroom, you always felt a sense of his warmth and care for each student, and I still remember so many of his stories vividly all these years later. The life lessons he shared were so insightful and he brought fun into the classroom. Thank you Mr Moriarty, Lord Bless you and Keep you!

February 19, 2013

I was always so happy to walk into class & find Mr. Moriarty was our sub that day. It's been almost 18 years since I graduated, but I never forgot him & his wonderful stories. My thoughts & prayers are with your family.

I send my prayers to you and your family. I was just telling my kids about Mr. Moriarty being the best substitute teacher that my classmates and I had ever had. His one rule, behave and don't get three strikes or your out, so I can tell you a Grandpa story. He is remembered and his memory will continue to live on. God Bless.

A true teacher! Loved a MR. M story. Who knew storytelling was the best way to get a group of high schoolers to behave. Even though we was a sub- he is one of my favorite teachers I ever had. - Bryana C. (Park High Grad 1998)

February 18, 2013

This wonderful man was the best substitute teacher you could ask for. I'll never forget his stories about him and his sweetheart. He also said that every day should be Valentine's Day and we'd all say "Happy Valentine's Day Mr. Moriarty!" any day of the year that we saw him.

February 18, 2013

When you walked into class & saw Mr. Moriarty instead of your regularly scheduled teacher, you knew it was going to be a GREAT period :) I hope he was able to brighten the days of the hospice workers in the same fashion. He is the only substitute teacher that I have any recollection of. The man knew what he was doing.

February 18, 2013

Dan was a wonderful mentor for me when I joined the MEA staff in 1981. I remember what a wonderful, patient man he was. And, strange enough, I remember most this quote from him: "I think someday we will realize that taxes are a bargain." He meant, of course, that the money we invest in education, in children, will pay-off tenfold. Farewell, you beautiful person.

Walt Wettschreck

February 18, 2013

I could have been having the worst day ever at school and then I find out Mr. Moriarty was subbing... it would change my whole day. He was the best and I remember just as well now as I do from 20 years ago. Thank you for being such a fantastic person.

John Borgen

February 18, 2013

Dan was on the staff of the MEA when I joined the organization in 1971 as a UniServ Director. I always admired Dan's even temper and calmness. Dan inspired me to always look for the opportunity to use our union's programs to elevate the teaching profession, especially in the context of contract negotiations. Rather than just fighting for salaries and benefits and leaves of absence to stand for processes and advocate for conditions which enhance teaching and learning opportunities for students. Always gentle and kind, Dan was a teacher through and through.

I worked with Dan at the MEA from 1972-1982. He was well respected and such a gentle man. The comments from those students he touched in life is great testimony.
RIP Dan.

We who had Dan as a full time teacher were indeed quite fortunate. We just did not know it until years later. He remarked at one of our reunions how he enjoyed having the whole Senior Class as students. He knew all of us and remembered our names 45 years later. I will never forget him attending a visitation for one of our classmates who had died tragically flying a WWII vintage aircraft. Dan was still recovering from bypass surgery at the time but found a way to pay last respects for “one of his students”. We did not know at that time of his service during WWII in the Marines. And I am positive he is proofreading this text as I type it.
Rest in Peace Dan.

What sad news, but what a wonderful person; he will continue to be fondly remembered. Dan was the best English teacher I ever had, but more than that he was a "man for all seasons", a touchstone for the humanities, who was caring and left a lasting influence on his students, as all great teachers do. Grandpa Moriarty, as he liked us to call him, was such an amazing substitute teacher. I will always remember him, though it has been 10 years since I was even in high school. He is one of the few teachers I remember quite distinctly, because he had a connection with the students that I've never really seen in any teacher. He knew how to engage them in a fun style of learning. He was such a special person and he will live on through the memories of those lives he touched each day. May he rest in peace and may peace be brought to his family and friends as they grieve.

Mr. Moriarty was the best substitute teacher ever! When you walked into class and saw him standing there instead of your regular teacher, you knew class was actually going to be fun and end with a grandpa story if we were good. I can still remember watching people walk into class and whisper "yes" under their breath followed with a fist pump when they saw him. Thank you and rest in peace.

Mr. Moriarty was my favorite substitute teacher, and in fact the only one I remember from school. He was always full of joy and stories. I remember his smiling face and the happiness in his voice when he shared stories of his children and his wife. I wish I could remember the nickname he had for her, I remember I thought it was very cute.
I sure hope the Moriarty family knows what an impact Dan had on so many students. May they be surrounded by the Lord's peace and find comfort knowing their parents have reunited and are sharing stories.

I will never forget Mr. Moriarty as a substitute teacher! When we walked in to a class to see our normal teacher out for the day and Mr. Moriarty there, it was like a special treat. If the class was good, at the end he would tell one of his grandpa stories... and we were always were good because we loved him and his tales from days past. Sad to hear of his passing, but happy to know generations of children were touched by his passion for teaching and storytelling abilities. He is one of those people you could meet only a couple times and remember forever. Rest in peace.

Teachers can have a big influence on you if they are special. Dan Moriarity was one of those special ones. Even more important than grammar or syntax to Mr. Moriarity was the story you could tell through writing. Plus he was an excellent story teller himself. The room always quieted and rapt attention was paid when he would say, "That reminds me of a story." I also knew Dan well after high school when I was covering the state capitol and Dan was working for the Minnesota Education Association. His passion for education and ability to tell a story served him in good stead there. I'm sorry he wasn't able to attend our recent class reunions (Class of 62). Many people in our class liked and admired him.
