Richard BRUST Obituary

Age 93, of St. Paul Passed away peacefully January 3, 2016 with his family around him. Preceded in death by his parents Anna and Waldo Brust, and sister Virginia Peirson. Survived by his dear wife of 67 years, Joan; five children John, Suzanne (John Shepard), Rick, Nan Michaud (Mike), and Barbara; five grandchildren: Drew, Mikael, Anna, Nat, and Charlie; two great grandchildren: Gigi and Mason; and a dear nephew, cousins, and many friends. As a 40-year employee of 3M, Dick started and became Corporate VP of the tax Division. He grew up in New Richmond Wisconsin, earned an accounting degree from UW Madison and a JD from William Mitchell. He was a golfer, hunter, and avid collector of duck decoys, a Shriner, and was President of the National Tax Association from 1986-87. Dad made connections with people wherever he went. He loved leading his family in multi-part harmonies, and led a full and wonderful life. We'll do our best to carry your melody, Dad. Our heartfelt thanks to his Allina Hospice team and caregivers at the Episcopal Homes. A celebration of Dick's life will be held June 4th at the Falcon Heights Church-UCC. Memorials in Dick's memory can be sent to Falcon Heights Church - UCC or the Union Gospel Mission.

Jo and Family,

What a pleasure in our lives to have known Dick. As his predecessor as treasurer of the Minnesota Decoy Collectors Association, he was my accountant mentor as well as good friend. He could be tough and lovable in the same conversation. I'll never forget the time spent in the office of your home listening to his perusal of my accounting skills.

As you can tell, this is from our hearts.

Love to you all...Larry and Sandra Thomforde

This photo was taken when Family Brust and Carter Stenberg serenaded decoy collectors in St. Charles in 2011. Dick's spirit and style made our world better and produced a special harmony. Dick was a special mentor, provided wonderful guidance and support, and we will be eternally grateful for his contributions to our club and decoy collecting. God bless!

Jo so sorry to hear about Dick's passing. Joe and I have so many memories of you and Dick at the various decoy shows going back to the Drake show so long ago, circa 1969. Sad to lose another of the 'Ole Guard' as Joe French would say. God bless and grant you and your family peace.

DICK WAS A GENEROUS HUMBLE MAN WHO I GREATLY ADMIRED.AS A NEW DECOY COLLECTOR, HE WAS A FOUNTAIN OF KNOWLEDGE AND HISTORY AS HE HELPED ME.HE ALWAYS HAD A STORY OR TWO ABOUT EACH DECOY IN HIS COLLECTION.
BEING ON THE MINNESOTA DECOY COLLECTORS BOARD WITH DICK WAS A PLEASURE.
I WILL MISS HIM.

We all lost a great guy, who will be remembered as a collector of decoys, a walking history book, an organizer, and most of all a friend.

Dick was one of the co-founders of The Minnesota Decoy Collectors Association. With his guidance and mentoring, it has become one of the best decoy groups in the nation. He also started The Minnesota Decoy Foundation. He was very proud of his accomplishments in these organizations. He was a main fixture at our shows, and meetings, always enjoying the activities and visiting with fellow collectors.

We had the opportunity to visit with Dick and Jo at the Episcopal Home in September. We are so glad we had this time with him.
Dick will always be remembered for his vast knowledge and great stories. He was a friend to so many, and we are very fortunate to have known him.

It was in the late 60s that a friend and I went to St Paul to look at a new 4 spindle carver. That was the first time I met Dick we had a couple of days together. He was so helpful. I think he bought a pr. of teal I had with me.

He took us to meet two duck stamp Artist that were from the area Les Kouba and Ed Morris. Think we only met one or two times after at decoy shows.

My memories of Dick are these, he ranks as one of the top few that I would call a true Gentleman. In every sense of the word, The world has suffered a great loss with the passing of Mr. Teal.
