Richard Tower Obituary

RAYMOND - Richard H. "Dick" Tower, 73, died on May 20, 2012, at his home in Raymond after a lengthy illness.

He was born on June 17, 1938, in Goffstown, the son of the late Robert A. and Vanessa M. (Shatney) Tower.

A graduate of Goffstown High School, Dick entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Nov. 14, 1956. After boot camp, he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and traveled through the South Pacific to several locations including Borneo, the Philippines, and Vietnam. He later came back to the United States and served as a small arms instructor in California before returning home to Manchester, where he was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Dick was a true physical fitness buff. He was an avid runner who ran up Mt. Washington twice, as well as participating in several half-marathons. He was also formerly a dance instructor and enjoyed many activities including biking, golfing, and horseshoes. He has resided in Raymond for the last 25 years and was a member of the Raymond Sportsman's Club.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Deborah (Whitcomb) Tower of Raymond; two sons, Christopher W. Tower of Manchester, and Brian A. Tower of Pittsfield; three stepsons, Joseph Woods of Epping, David Woods of Pittsfield, and Richard Grigway of Epping; one brother, Douglas Tower of Florida; two sisters, Janet and husband William Parker of New Boston, and Beverly Moller and her companion David Maul; his sister-in-law, Beatrice Tower of Goffstown; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Deb and family, I was so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. It was my privilege to know and work with Dick. He very pointedly and politely informed me one day that I was to never address someone as an 'ex Marine". With a smile, he told me to use the term, "former Marine". I've been using that expression for the last twenty seven years.
