Ruth Miles Matthias, 91, of Morrisville, died Monday, February 2, 2015, at the Crouse Community Center. She was born to David and Helen Williams Miles in Kingston, PA, on June 3, 1923. After graduating from Kingston High School, she earned a nursing degree from Wilkes-Barre Hospital School of Nursing. She and a number of her classmates moved to NYC to work during WW II. She met her future husband, Dr. Frank Matthias, at a Staten Island hospital shortly after the war. They were married in Kingston, PA, on March 29, 1947, and after a 3-day honeymoon in Atlantic City, they moved to Munnsville, NY, and set up a medical practice. In 1950, they purchased the house and practice from Dr. Bruce Stores in Morrisville, where she has resided since. While raising 3 children, Ruth was Frank's helpmate in his practice. She was an active member of the former Methodist Church, participated on the committee that created the youth center in the old firehouse, worked part-time at the Hamilton Hospital, substituted as nurse at the high school, and was a Girl Scout leader. Ruth received the Rose to the Living from the Rotary Club for her community service. Ruth and Frank also hosted bridge nights and numerous foreign exchange students in their home. Ruth had an open door for all of her friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews. Ruth is survived by her three children, Betsy Matthias, of Richmondville, NY, Dr. Heddy-Dale Matthias and her husband, Roger Gilbert, of Madison, MS, and Dr. Paul Miles-Matthias and his wife, Dr. Linda C. Coffin, of Seekonk, MA; her only grandchild, Zachary Matthias, of Crested Butte, CO; numerous nieces and nephews; and Robert D. Hart of Cazenovia. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank; her sister, Jane Duffy; and two nieces, Marlene Duffy Young and Barbara Duffy Lieberman. Services are private and under the direction of Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville, NY.
