ERNEST PERO Obituary

PERO, ERNEST GENESIS JR. August 21, 1931 to February 21, 2012 Ernest was born in Newport, Arkansas. His parents Ernest G. Pero, Sr. and Mattie Pero moved to Santa Monica, California, when Ernest was four years old. Ernie served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1975, earning the Navy Achievement Medal in 1971. He was on Bikini Atoll for the atomic bomb test in 1958, re-enlisted for duty in Vietnam aboard the USS Constellation in 1967 and, in 1968, he assisted the survivors of the USS Pueblo incident, following their release from a North Korean prison. After serving our country for 20 years and earning numerous meritorious medals of achievements, he retired as Senior Chief Personnelman. The Pero family are longtime residents of Lemon Grove, California, and they own and operate a successful Real Estate and Property Management business in Lemon Grove since 1986. Ernie had a passion for bowling, connected with those men who served and retired from the military known as Mills Parks Home Boys, and was a longtime Lemon Grove Rotarian. No one was ever a stranger to Ernie. With humor he touched many lives. Ernie is survived by Doretha Pero, his wife of 30 years, son Ernest Genesis Pero III, and stepson Lawrence Dwayne Felton. Visitation is Wednesday, February 29th, from 4-7 p.m. at Conrad Lemon Grove Mortuary. Services will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Word of Life Worship Center, 8691 Echo Drive, La Mesa, CA 91941. Interment will immediately follow at 12:30 p.m. at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, with full military honors by the U.S. Navy. Memorials suggested to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852. www.conradlemongrove.com

Ernie was a wonderful friend and neighbor. He was a strong supporter of our local school district and our city. When I think of people who really love our community, I think of Ernie.

Heaven is no longer missing the angel Ernie Pero!

It is extremely difficult to measure the impact of a truly great man; for he leaves no resume'; he blows no trumpets and he garners not the spotlight of he world. What he does, he does because of his faith, his family and his friends. Ernie Pero was truly a great man and we will all miss his wit, his warmth and his wisdom. The peace of the LORD is now his strength. YOU WILL BE MISSED MY FRIEND!

I just wanted to say that I really didnt know Mr. Pero personally, but I worked at HomeFed at College Grove 18 or so years ago and I remember him as a wonderful, friendly, happy man. When I saw his picture in the paper today, I remembered him right away. Im sure if he had this impact on me, a bank teller, Im sure you have many fond memories. I am sorry for your loss.

So sorry to read of Ernie Pero's passing. He was a kind gentleman and an involved community member and a welcome addition in our school office when he came to visit his son's class at school. My sympathy and thoughts to his family.

Lemon Grove will not be the same without the calm, steady presence of my
dear neighbor Ernie Pero. For over twenty five years I lived just three doors away.
Always cheerful, always right (well, almost always), always fair and just in his contact with others on McKnight Drive, Ernie, you will be sorely missed.
With respect, Ben Taylor

We will miss them and you.

From my very earliest memories from nearly 48 years ago I can remember Ernie Pero. Back then he always wore a fine hat and smoked a pipe, to this day I love the smell of a pipe. One of my father's oldest friends from the Navy days he was always full of life and lots of fun.

What an honor when he came to Colorado a few years ago to stand with me as I was promoted to the rank of USAF Colonel.

After not seeing each other in over 25 years, Ernie and my father Chris laughed all night like 24 year old sailors all over again

Blessings to Dee and family during this difficult time

Dearest Ernie,
I was blessed with your friendship for over 54 years, both during our time stationed together at Miramar in the late 50s while on active duty in the Navy, and for many years in San Diego after my retirement in the late 70s. My deepest regret is that we missed so many years together after my family and I had to leave San Diego for employment elsewhere. Never the less, we managed to stay in touch and visit during my periodic vacations in San Diego.
My family and I will miss you my dear friend. Your work here on earth is through so rest in eternal peace until we meet again. Fair winds and following seas.

Enie you will truly be missed you were God's angel on earth. We worked together for 23 years and I am blessed and honored to call you a true friend. You are now celebrating, no more foreclosures, no more shortsales, but I know you will be one of God's more talented and astute property managers, managing God's properties!
Love Always
