I've thought about John from time to time over the years. When I finally decided to try to contact him I saw his beautiful eulogy on the internet and was very sad and disappointed he was no longer with us. John was a high school surfing friend. I had the pleasure of surfing with him every so often over a period of a couple years, and we also spent a few weeks in Waikiki in 1969. He was the most fascinating person. He always seemed to be outside of everything, sort of like a puppeteer controlling everything in his vicinity and easily laughing about it all. Little did I know that at 22 years old he was just warming up, getting ready to devour life and masterfully create his dreams. He was an inspiration to me, although I didn't know him that well nor spend that much time with him. But I admired him and wondered how it was that he could be who he was. I don't know if anyone will ever see this, but I'd love to speak to anyone that was in his immediate circle in Hawaii. John, I remember our time together like it was yesterday. I know you're having a good time wherever you are and that that place is better for your being there. Love you my friend, Paul Baumgarten

John and I go way back to the North Shore on Oahu in 1970 when we both worked in sin city (Waikiki). I worked in Chuck Steakhouse organization as a cook and JB worked as a waiter at the Red Vest. We always shared rides to town for work and back to the North Shore in the wee hours in the morning; lucky for us we both made it to this age considering the the thing we did.
I moved to Maui in 1974 and didn't see JB until I ran into him at Mitch's wake in Ulupalakua in1998. Since then JB and I have had many good times together riding horses and having great conversations. One side of him was always a mystery to me but that's what made JB what he was; I will miss his dry humor. Aloha JD

For all those who had the honor of sharing in his life and in the life of those he loved, hearts have been opened.
Now the wind carries his spirit that continues to touch our lives. The ebb and flow of the ocean's mist will forever bear his words.
To Jessie, memories will strengthen you and keep you safe.

Dear,
Aunt Jessie I'm trully sorry for your loss JB really was a great guy. My first time meeting uncle JB he was easy to get along with because he was laid back, down to earth, and all around a nice guy. He took me surfing for the first time. All that morning I tried to get on one wave but I kept falling off my board. Except for the one wave at the end of the morning. I actually caught and road that wave. As I was riding that wave I remember looking out of the corner of my eye and seeing JB with his arms in the air and his facial expression looking more excited then I was. Then we packed up and he treated me to lunch and a movie. So, in all stories short I'm so thankful for meeting him, having such a great day with him, and learning a life lesson from him. No matter how many times you get knocked down keep trying and you will surely reach your goal.

I wish I had had the opportunity to have gotten to know you better over the years-there were so many times I had wished I lived near Jess (& you). You were such a firecracker! I remember the first time I met you on one of my visits to San Diego, when I was given the daunting task of organizing all your folks' files in that high rise near the water (I almost fainted as there was a LOT). You walked in the door with your friend/employee and just kind of barked "hey, what's up" when Jess introduced us. I had opened my mouth to say "it is a pleasure to finally meet you" but I got as far as "it" because I was speaking to your back as you hadn't even stopped but had kept on walking & talking to the guy! My instant thought was & I accidently said it out loud "how rude" as Jess laughed. Over the years, I came to know you through my sister's eyes, words & heart. I must admit I shook my head many a time as Jess spoke of the many sides of your "colorful" personality (& potty mouth). One thing I DO know is...how much you meant to my sister...she had finally met her match (2 peas-in-a-pod? nah, more like 2 stubborn hard heads!). I did realize though-you guys really loved each other in your own quirky ways.
*Jess...I wish so bad I was physically there for you during this difficult time..but I am sending my love & support over the many miles separating us. I love you. Take comfort in the fact you were among the many fortunate to have had him touch your life (heart & soul). I pray that our Lord will touch you with his love and give you comfort.
*JB...join the rest of the Big Kahunas doing what Big Kahunas do and catch the big ones to your heart's content! Aloha til we all meet again someday.

Bubby - Haven't heard that name in a long time have you? Remember the time Santa brought you the bow and arrow set? You sent me out in to the field, behind the house, so you could shoot them into the air. I was suppose to catch them so they would not get dirty. Boy was mom mad at you. I'll be there Sunday!!! Helen
