James BARKLEY Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7, 2016.
BARKLEY, James Terrance (Terry)
Architect AIBC, MRAIC
November 15, 1937 - January 22, 2016
James Terrance (Terry) Barkley passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 22, 2016 with his beloved companion, Iona Douglas, beside him. Terry was predeceased by his father, James Loury Barkley of Lethbridge, Alberta, mother Dorothy Barkley (nee Conners) of Coalhurst, Alberta, and brother John (Jackie) Barkley of Vancouver, B.C. He is survived by his close cousins, Bruce MacDonald and Bob Connors. Growing up, Terry moved with his family to army barracks throughout Canada and overseas. Ultimately, his love of history and world events were cultivated throughout his childhood. He settled in Vancouver and attended UBC. Terry was an accomplished architect who specialized in the design of schools and sports venues. His legacy remains with his projects which include the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, Minoru Aquatic Centre, Ladner Leisure Centre, Qualicum Beach Aquatic Centre, Lynn Valley Community Centre, Westwind Elementary School and Karen Magnussen Wave Pool. To Iona, Terry was a great joy; kind, wise, funny, loyal and patient. He was a student of history, a lover of music, theatre and travel. He was devoted to his friends, most especially, his beloved professional colleagues, Barry Thorson and Nick Milkovich. Terry is deeply missed. Family and friends will be notified about a celebration of life for Terry which is planned for the Spring.

I just heard of Terry's passing....I am very sad to hear this. Terry was a very respected friend and colleague. He added greatly to the architectural profession but more importantly brought smiles to faces everywhere he went. Terry was a one in a million!

I smile when I remember the great photos of you--particularly the one you were talked into where you are in a suit and tie lounging in an inner tube in the middle of your just finished North Van wave pool. Also the sublime beauty of the sunset photo you took of our kayak group amongst the Broken Islands. I still miss our B movie Fridays.

We will miss our Christmas Eves together, sharing some of your favourite bubbly but we will smile when remembering those days kayaking the Broken Islands, Oscar nights, New Years at AP Guest Ranch and the many dinners we had together. May your travels now be just as enjoyable.

O dear, Terry! Of course having worked with you many years you've been in my thoughts - and now I've just heard the news. You were indeed a fine fellow to work for on the many projects we did all the way from Duncan McNab's time. I can't go by our projects without you and the rest of the firm coming to mind - I think we did some really good work. You are remembered well and will be as long as i'm alive. John Camfield

Sleep well my friend. Found memories of the short but enjoyable time we worked together.

I knew Terry for many years and worked for him for a few of them! He was a wonderful boss and a kind and generous friend. I have many, many happy memories of times shared with Terry. He will be missed.
