Peter Rastall

Peter Rastall November 18, 1931 - March 27, 2015 Peter was given a diagnosis of terminal cancer some three years ago. He fought bravely, always interested in the scientific nature of his treatments, but in the last few months, things deteriorated. In his final week-end, his daughter Julia, granddaughter Kate, partner Diane and son-in-law James got to share special time with him. There were a lot of good laughs, a few tears and even a British porter beer. Peter Rastall lived a full and wonderful life. He traveled the world, reached the top echelons of his profession as a Professor at UBC in the Physics and Astronomy Department from 1957 to 1996. He climbed, skied, read poetry and observed humanity with a British wit that was utterly disarming. To see his daughter grow-up to be a beautiful woman who is raising a granddaughter who shares his love of learning made his whole journey complete. Diane, Peter's partner of many years, is a truly remarkable person who provided incredible strength to all of us in his final chapter. The dignity Peter showed in his decisions and demeanor in his final days was inspiring.
