James Schmaeling Obituary

James David Schmaeling, "Jimmy," loving son, brother and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 22, 2010 at the age of 18. He was born on Dec. 2, 1991.

Throughout his life Jimmy loved to smile, laugh and bring joy to everyone he came in contact with. He brought joy and touched people's hearts with his smile. Jimmy enjoyed school, standing in his stander and watching exercise videos. He enjoyed flirting with girls, riding the bus to school, day trips, shopping, cooking, and watching his sister's softball games. Jimmy always wanted to be the center of the party.

Some of his favorite family vacations have been house boating on Lake Powell, trips to the grandparent Schuler cabin at Big Bear Lake, road trips to Seattle, Wash., and overnight trips to grandparent Schmaeling home in Redondo Beach. Recently Jimmy went on a wonderful trip to Disneyworld with his family on a wish granted to him from Make-a-Wish Foundation. Jimmy lived his complete life in Ventura where he came in contact with great teachers, teacher aides and physical therapists from Easter Seals, Tri-Counties Regional Center, Penfield, De Anza, Ventura High School and Dorothy Boswell School.

The family wishes to thank the many teachers, family, friends and students that brought joy to his life.

He is survived by his mother, Cindy, and father, David; brother, Thomas, and sister, Susan; grandparents, Dan and Eunice Schmaeling, Heinz and Anne Schuler; Aunt Catherine, Uncle Robert, Uncle Dan and Aunt Grace, Uncle Patrick and Aunt Heidi; cousins, Elizabeth, Katie, Brian, John, Gabrielle and Jackie.

Rosary Service will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. Funeral Services will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Sacred Heart Church in Ventura. It's been almost a year and I still find myself looking to see you. You grace my dreams from time to time and my heart always. I hear you whisper in my ear and feel you close. I was truly blessed to be part of your world even for a little while it is a gift I can never repay. I love you.

Dear Cindy - Mary emailed me and told me about Jimmy. I'm the one who came to your house for the wish granting with Mary.. Jimmy had such a beacon of light on his face when he smiled. I remember how his eyes twinkled and I just thought I wish I could just squeeze him so hard. He was so sweet. I too have lost a son, Lonnie, (he was 19) so I can truly say I know how you feel. It's the worst pain a mother could ever go through. I never questioned God why, I just wanted Lonnie to be happy and not be in pain any more. I know God is the only one who can explain all this and believe me when I get to heaven I will definitely ask him. Just know that I feel privileged to have met him and I'm so glad you got to go to Disneyworld with the family. I can just imagine how much he smiled! Take care and if you ever want to talk just drop me an email. Love, Joyce Bustrum

Your Canadian cousins have been in shock since we found out yesterday morning about your loss. I am still trying to find the words to describe how profoundly sad we are. I spoke to my kids last night when I got home and told them about Jimmy’s passing and we all just couldn’t believe it.

The kids all remember Jimmy from the trip we took to California a few years back. I recall my sister Sue at dinner joking with Jimmy and his wonderful infectious laugh. Even Gabriel, who was only 5 back then, said he remembers Jimmy being so happy with such a great smile. I read the obit this afternoon and was very touched. He was a wonderful boy and his passing has touched us deeply.

God bless you and David, Suzie and Thomas… You are all in our thoughts at this difficult time.

My heartfelt condolences,

Helene, Natalia, Martin and Gabriel

Cindy and family,
Words can not express the sadness felt for your loss of your son.
I know a piece of your heart is missing, but what a wonderful gift Jimmy
gave everyone who had the fortune of meeting him. He was always happy
and when he wasn't smiling I was blessed in discovering how to make him laugh.
It showed me that despite all the hardships in these times of trials and tribulations,
to cherish your children each and every day that we have with them.
Thank you for your strength, kindness and love for these past 19 years, for being role models to all us other families that take every day and every breath for granted.
Our thoughts and prayers our with you

On a personal level, Cindy, I am so sad to hear
about Jimmy. We have spoken on the phone

great family and I am sure
that they will do anything for you!

Hello Cindy, David, Tommy and Suzie:
We were deeply saddened when we learned of your loss. Our deepest sympathies. Stella and I were in Ventura twice in the last few years and had the pleasure of seeing you and getting to know you as well as the Manning family and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Even though communication with Jimmy was difficult, there was a certain something that one could grasp when he looked at you - his eyes said it all. His passing was sudden and is not easy to accept. Our prayers are with you all.

Jimmy I got to meet by chance and was so touched by his smile. I am truly sorry for your loss, may God Bless you and may your memories of Jimmy stay in your hearts always.

I am sorry I don't know this young man, but after reading his obituary and the many wonderful testimonials, I wish I had been blessed to know him. It is obvious that he is very loved! I recently lost my best friend in the whole world--it is hard, very hard. She is walking with God, Jesus, and her Mom now. I know she is happy and I am so proud of her. I will pray that Lisa will come forward in Heaven to meet "Jimmy", welcoming him with the same love and affection she always had for everyone! God bless you all, and God bless this young man.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Schmaeling and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I thoroughly enjoyed Jimmy's smile each school morning. His eyes spoke volumes to me. The day before I was lucky enough to be in his classroom! I won't forget that day! I envision him now in God's Glory looking down upon all his loved ones and friends with his trademark smile! You will all be in my prayers through a novena for him. God Bless you!

Dear Cindy and Dave:

Words cannot express what is in my heart but I will try. Because Jimmy brought such joy and love into your life, he made you the beautiful people that you are. Jimmy made you great! He gave you uncompromising love and you returned the same. Jimmy made you strong and because of Jimmy you conquered all obstacles thrown in your path. I admire the both of you so deeply -- a lesser person would never be able to fill your shoes. I question if I could. May God continue to bless the both of you because he already blessed you with Jimmy.

With much love,

Karen Hemming
