Paul Laubacher Obituary

Paul S. Laubacher

Sacramento, CA

Paul S. Laubacher passed away from natural causes on June 15, 2016. He was 91 years old. For the past twenty-one months he was cared for by family in Sacramento.
Paul was born in Oxnard, California on September 13, 1924 to Ann (McGrath) Laubacher and Edward G. Laubacher. He was the fifth of six children. He was the last living grandchild of Dominick and Bridget McGrath, one of the original pioneering families of Ventura County. His uncle, Father John S. Laubacher, initiated the construction of Santa Clara Church, Santa Clara Cemetery, and Saint John's Hospital in Oxnard.
Since a good part of his youth was spent growing up during the Depression, Paul would say, ""I was born with short arms and deep pockets.""
He attended Santa Clara Grammar School and graduated from Santa Clara High. As a youth he delivered meat for Martin & Bright Butchers.
Exiting a movie theater on the evening of December 7, 1941, he and his brother Harold saw paper boys standing in the street and saying something about a Pearl Harbor. This struck him as an odd occurrence on a Sunday evening in the quiet town of Oxnard. On the way home from the theater they purchased a newspaper to examine the location and circumstances surrounding Pearl Harbor. Not long after this, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps of the Eighth Air Force, serving as a radio operator on a B-17 for the 390th Bombardment Group. He reached the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Air Metal. Paul flew on twenty-four missions over Germany. He and his B-17 crew participated in Operation Chowhound, where humanitarian food drops were carried out to relieve a famine in German-occupied Holland. He always attributed his and two of his brother's successful return from the war to his mother's daily recitation of the rosary.
After his return from the war, he attended and graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA. While away at college he met his future wife, Adria M. Harris, settled in San Francisco, and was employed by Eloesser Heynemann. It wasn't long before the young family made its way back to the Oxnard plain, subsequently raising seven children.
He was employed in the retail men's clothing business as a salesman and sales manager. Initially, he began sales at Brigham's in Ventura, then Diener's Men's Wear in Oxnard and finally Ronald Bank Man's Store in Ventura. He knew many people and was a friend to everyone in town because of the many individuals he met in sales and his large extended family.
He was the oldest Past Grand Knight of Council 750 of the Knights of Columbus in Oxnard and a member of the Men of Promise at Santa Clara parish. He contributed many hours to fundraising events for Mother's for Life.
Visits with his children, grandchildren, and great granddaughter, attending their sporting events and musical performances, hosting and celebrating more than fifty family Easter barbecues, visiting National Parks, the family's cabin near Lake Tahoe, and attending Air Force reunions were his great joys in retirement.
He was preceded in death by his second son, Peter John Laubacher. Surviving family members include his beloved wife of 65 years, Adria, sons Paul (Barbara), Harold (Andrea), Joel (Aggie), Tim (Lisa), William (Diana), and one daughter, Mary Alyce (John) Gisla, fifteen grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
A rosary will be held for Paul at Santa Clara Church, 323 South E Street, Oxnard, CA 93030, on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 6:30 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Santa Clara Church in Oxnard. Donations in his honor may be made to the Santa Clara Church Building Fund and mailed to the church or to St. John's Healthcare Foundation, 1600 N. Rose Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93030.

I got to meet Paul Laubacher in the group of Men of Promise at Santa Clara church in 2010. He truly exemplified what the group stood for. He amazed me with all the love, energy, and enthusiasm he had at his age. He even made me laugh quite a few times. I got to say once I walked him home from the group meeting and he gave good words of advice on marriage and two years into my marriage Iam still using it. My father mentioned to me that him and my grandfather would shop at Ronald Bank Fine Men's store in Ventura and boy my grandfather would only want him to take care of him. Also 2 priest from Guadalupe church would always look for him at the shop.Thank you for who you were here on earth and Iam sure you're making them laugh up in heaven. Love you, Orlando Herrera. I met Paul during my attendance at the Santa Clara Men of Promise several years ago. Although I didn't get the opportunity to get to know Paul on a personal level, I was blessed to be in his presence during the meetings and to learn from his wisdom and unique perspective on matters related to world events and our shared Christian faith. Paul, may you rest in eternal peace, and may all your family and friends share in their wonderful memories of the time they were blessed to spend with you on this planet Earth.

I met Paul in summer 2010 when I joined Men of Promise at Santa Clara Church. He was very helpful, encouraging and incisive in acclimating me to his viewpoints. He was a very commanding presence. I really listened when he spoke. Many of his attitudes toward traditional Catholic godly instruction were comforting to me regarding how to live life according to these values. Paul led by example.

I will miss Paul's steadiness and humor. I give full bodied condolences to his entire family.

RIP Paul

Paul is a special friend I surely miss! Having met him through the Men of Promise he had been an inspiration. He was my constant companion during the 8:30AM daily masses at the Santa Clara Church, the 3:00PM Divine Mercy novenas at the church during lent, and especially during the 7:30am rosaries at the Men of Promise. His sense of humor was outstanding! Thanks for the memories, Paul. I will miss you always!

Dear Adria and family,

Paul and I shared several things together. Our Catholic faith, members of the Men of Promise at Santa Clara Church and both being veterans. We both served during war times, him, WW II, me, Vietnam. Paul had a hearing loss, as I do, that was related to his active duty service. He did not know he could get hearing aids through the VA but I told him he should apply. He did, and with his new aids, he was able to hear things that he could not for 20+ years. He was delighted and I can imagine Adria was too. Just being able to fully hear the Mass again was a joy for Paul. Paul for sure was a member of the "Greatest Generation", a man of character. As the senior member of our Men of Promise group, he was always looked to for his words of wisdom. He was an exemplary Catholic man, one who love his faith and was free to share it with others. He was a positive and upbeat man with a great sense of humor. He loved his family.
May his soul rest in peace. My most sincere condolences to his family. My God's great love comfort you in this time of sorrow.

It is my pleasure to be able to call three generations of this wonderful family friend. Paul who I meet first at Men of Promise, Tim from That Man is You at OLA, and of course Andrew (Alob) from playing at the teen mass.
All of you and us are better men for having known Paul.
What class, dignity, and humidity.
Rest in Best Friend-until we meet again!

Dear Adria & family,

I am truly blessed to have known Paul (and to know you and members of your family) through the Church. He will always be remembered by me for his devotion to our Lord and His Church; for his dedication to the Catholic Men of Promise; and for his steadfast stance on the dignity and right to life of ALL human beings from the moment of conception until natural death. He was a true kind and gentle man, and I loved his sense of humor.
I am praying for the eternal repose of his soul with our Lord in heaven, and for God's peace and comfort to be with all of you.

With love and prayers,
John De Keyzer
