David Byrum Obituary

David Scott Byrum received the ultimate healing from his leukemia and was taken to his heavenly home Tuesday, July 5, 2011. A celebration of David's life will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 8, at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, 1300 Columbus Avenue. Family will be available after the service in the church parlor.

David married Cheri' Dill Dec. 23, 1983, and began a chapter in his life that ultimately led to the blessing of their two sons, Nathaniel and Benjamin. He absolutely loved being a dad. He was involved in the Royal Ambassador program for many years, coached Upward Basketball and coached Little League for several years. Family vacations were special to him and will continue to be topics of family conversations for years to come.

David was born Dec. 21, 1957. His parents brought him up in the church and he accepted Jesus Christ into his heart when he was eight years old. David grew as a Christian through his passion for daily Bible readings for over 45 years. His life was a true picture of what a godly man looked like. If ever there was a man of God, David was the man. He was a faithful deacon and committee member at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church where he had been a member for over 18 years. One of his spiritual gifts was Bible teaching where he taught youth and adult Sunday School.

He also loved to learn. David received his Civil Engineering Technology degree: A.A.S from Texas State Technical Institute and a BBA in Business Management from The University of Texas at Arlington. David's career began as a field engineer for H&B Contractors for over five years. Later, he was employed by the City of Waco for about 12 years serving in several capacities including survey party chief, civil design technician, landfill manager, and program administrator in the solid waste department. His current position as estimator/project manager at Mazanec Construction for the past five plus years pulled his love of construction and technical background together.

He is survived by his wife Cheri'; sons, Nat and Ben; father, John Byrum; brothers, John Byrum and wife, Sandy, and Chris Byrum and wife, Marilyn; sister, Patricia Harvey and husband, Stephen; in-laws, Ken and Ann Dill; sisters-in-law, Kim Dill, and Cindy Fox and husband, Kent; brother-in-law, Kevin Dill; special family friends, Dave Alford and John and Kellie Berry; several beautiful nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.

A special thanks is extended to CABC pastors, Sunday School Class, Faith House in Houston, the Mazanec Construction family and our friends for your tremendous love and support during this journey.

In lieu of flowers, a college scholarship fund has been established at Educators Credit Union in Waco for David's sons, Nat and Ben.

Cheri', Nat and Ben....my heart is broken for you at this time. My family has been praying for y'all every night before we went to bed...teaching my children the power of prayer...we will continue...trying to explain to a 7 and 2 yr old is really hard when we don't understand....but this I do know...your family has always been Christian based and there is no doubt where David is rejoicing this very moment...what an inspiration you all have been for us on this journey...continue to stand strong with God's Word...love and big hugs...
