Jonathan Winterbottom Obituary
JONATHAN D. WINTERBOTTOM
Jonathan D. Winterbottom, 21, of Falls Church, Virginia, died while on active duty with the US Army in Al Nahrawan, Iraq. Born in Washington DC, he was a son of Robert T. Winterbottom and the late Evelyn Minougou Winterbottom. Cpl. Winterbottom was en route to assist fellow soldiers who were injured as a result of an IED explosion when the vehicle he was in was also hit by an IED.
Jonathan graduated from Falls Church High School in June 2003, where he participated in several athletic programs including swimming, cross-country, wrestling, lacrosse and football. He attended the Manassas Assembly of God and the Cornerstone Youth Ministry of the Episcopal Church of Falls Church. Jonathan loved living life to the fullest and did not refrain from giving full measure to everything he set out to do. His friendly and outgoing nature enabled him to make friends easily and his warm heart and dedication to family and friends leaves a lasting legacy.
In October, 2003, Jonathan enlisted in the US Army and was trained as a combat medic. Following his first year of combat in Iraq from January 2005 to January 2006, Jonathan received the Army Commendation Medal for valor, and returned to duty at Ft. Benning, Georgia with
the Third Brigade. He was deployed again to Iraq in March 2007 and serving with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
Survivors include his wife, SPC Rosa Sanchez, US Army of Iraq; father and stepmother, Robert and Emily Winterbottom of Vienna; a sister, Sarah Winterbottom of Vienna; a brother, Jeremy Winterbottom of Vienna; a stepsister, Cynthia Kangeyo of Vienna; paternal grandparents, Lt. Col. Frederick Winterbottom, US Army (Ret.) and Guennlyn Winterbottom of Venice, FL; maternal grandmother, Lokre Minougou of Tenkodogo, Burkina Faso, West Africa; aunts, Nancy Winterbottom of Durham, NH and Alice Winterbottom of Big Sur, CA and cousin, Dina Delma of Falls Church, VA.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2007 at NATIONAL FUNERAL HOME, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday at Word of Life Assembly, Backlick & Edsall Roads, Springfield, VA with interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Falls Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Burkina Faso Project Committee, http://apache.tamu.edu/fbf/projects.html, c/o Thomas Vollrath; Chair, Projects Committee.

18 years. A day doesn't go by without thinking of that DDay. We were coming off a mission that we went on at 2:30 am on the TST Team. We were on our way back to FOB Hammer. I will never let you be forgotten. My Hero, my Soldier. I do have pictures from the Ft. Benning memorial from 2007 if anyone would like a copy. Thanks for keeping my Soldier memories alive.

16 Years have come so fast I still remember that day our mission tp go out and help recover other vehicles. You are a great Soldier in the TST team we were busy in Iraq I think we spent more time on the roads of Iraq then we did actually sleeping. I still have pictures from Ft. Bennings memorial for both Winterbottom and Toledo Pulido. They moved the memorial wall to the back by the Infantry Muesum. Just know I will never forget you will always be my Soldier and I know Lilly is growing up so fast. RIP

I find myself remembering our phone call the night before and how we joked about you being a hero and to lay low so you could make it back... I joked with you about calling me from Iraq and how the number was always 15 numbers long so at first I didn´t know to pickup but as soon as I heard it was you I was instantly happy I didn´t let it go to VM. You would have loved to meet Jonathan
I call him Jonny I always tell him he was named after a Hero and the most caring, funny, charismatic man but one of my true friends in the Army. I never got to thank you for always making sure I was taken care of when I was pregnant with him. I miss the weekends and bbqs me, you, Sutton and Miles had... or our off base trips that we never gotten permission for lol I only hope to raise a son as honorable of a man as you !!! Every time I hear "How to Save a Life" or "Kiss of an Angel" my heart hurts but the memories will stay burned in my heart forever ..... I love you and miss you - MJ

I'm baffled at how quickly 15 years came and went. It's reflects the imprint that you have left, that there are so many of us still missing you deeply. Your larger than life personality, beaming smile, incredibly kind heart, and deep thoughtful voice. You are truly and forever a one of a kind soul, and I am thankful that I had to the honor to know you. I can say, I am who I am because I knew you. Though the pain remains I honor that was the cost to have known you and love you.

I Remember that day every minute of it.
At 230 am TST 3/1 Cav was called out to recover other vehicles in Niwan Iraq. At 8am on our way back to FOB Hammer we were involved in an IED buried under the ground. The Rest is Unfortunately History. My Soldiers I will Never Forget you and Let your Light Shine and any Good I do is in your name.i continue to have much unseen pain and scars. Hello it is me once again. Not a day truly goes by that I dont think about May 23rd 2007 our incident began at 238 am that day to go help other Soldiers that were Injured at 8 am that is when the IED went off and we all know the rest. Know that I will never forget my Soldiers that are the world to me and that day changed family lives Forvever. I still have pictures from the Tree of LIfe ceremony so if anyone would like some please let me know. Well here it is again unfortunately that D Day in my life, I will never forget or let anyone forget my Soldiers Spc. Winterbottom, and Spc. Toledo Pulido, that day will be forever in my mind, it does not get any easier as the years go by i promise u that. I hope the families are doing well and Lillian is a big girl now so i hope she understands about her Dad what he stood for and what he did in his career. My daughter Kristina R. Sutton was stationed with Jon at FOB Hammer. She was very upset when he passed. My daughter died a few years later with leukemia from Burn Pit exposure while they were over there. I have a wrist band made for Jon after he passed. It's been 8 years, mid-May to early June with sleepless nights. 10 years since my first tour and 3 lost brothers in early June. That day, 23MAY2007, you saved my soldiers. And I wasn't there.
That day stays buried beneath the surface of my mind, but today, one week shy of 8 years...I realized that those sleepless nights are my heart reminding me what my mind doesn't want to believe.

I met John when we were 12.
He had one of the purest hearts out there. He genuinely loved people, and wanted the best for them. I know this because when we first met I was a really shy kid. John helped me be more vocal and be myself.
He was never afraid to try new things. If he fell, he'd always get back up and keep moving.
The best people are those who leave you with a smile when you remember them --- and John is one of the very best.

As the distance of 5 years seems to march on, I cannot seem to distance the hard fact that one of my family friends was taken away so early. I remember that days when you, JJ, and Sarah would come over to play, and we'd all get into a lot of trouble. I remember those childhood memories dearly, and I think of them as part of my childhood. We all miss you here, and are thankful for blessing the lives of so many with your humor, straight talk, and vigor for life. Thank you for your sacrifice, and we pray that we will get to see you again when we join you in heaven.
