KELLOGG MARY MARGARET CASHELL KELLOGG Of South Egremont, Massachusetts, and Carlisle, Pennsylvania, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011, at Silverado Senior Living, Newport Beach, California. She was born on January 5, 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland, and was predeceased by her husband, Charles Flint Kellogg, her parents, Florence Gering Cashell and Irving Magruder Cashell, and her brothers, Irving Gering Cashell and John Gering Cashell. Mary Margaret grew up in Washington, DC, where she graduated from Central High School, Wilson Teachers College (B.A., 1937), and George Washington University (M.Ed., 1955). She taught for four years at Marist School in Washington and then trained as a secretary and worked at IBM. She held the position of Dean of Women at Dickinson College where her husband was the chairman of the history department. She lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, from 1948 to 1996 and spent her summers in Great Barrington and South Egremont, Massachusetts. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and served as the Carlisle chapter president. Because of her great interest in education, she served for many years on the Board of Overseers of Bard College at Simon's Rock. She and her husband were instrumental in developing the relationship between Bard College and Simon's Rock College and their eventual joining together. Mrs. Kellogg's summer home, April Hill, and the surrounding 140+ acres on Undermountain Road in South Egremont, have beendonated to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy /Appalachian Mountain Club and are now known as The Kellogg Conservation Center. The Kellogg Music Center at Simon's Rock was relocated and renovated in 1992 through a gift from Mary Margaret when she served as a College Overseer. When addressed by her first name, she was insistent on both names being used-Mary Margaret-the first names of her grandmothers. She was a lovely and loving lady who will be missed. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Joan Cashell of Farmville, Virginia and Sylvia Naylor of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania; her nieces, nephews and their spouses, Jane Cashell and Paul Barns of Irvine, California, Judy Cashell and John Varga of La Canada, California, Alan and Diann Cashell of Elkins, West Virginia, Brian and Helen Cashell of Pamplin, Virginia, David and Lynn Cashell of Springfield, Pennsylvania, David Naylor; 11 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and her cousins, Bernice (Skee) Gering Kelly and Col. George Gering, Jr. (Ret.) of Salisbury, Maryland and Col. Michael Gering (Ret.) and Hank Gering M.D. of Annapolis, Maryland. A memorial service will be held at Simon's Rock in August 2011, with details to follow.
