Robert Thompson Obituary


ROBERT CECIL THOMPSON (Age 89)  
Robert Cecill Thompson joined his wife of 63 years in heaven on Thursday afternoon, December 23, 2010. At the time of his death, he was residing at Liza's Residential Care in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He had formerly been a resident of Alexandria, Virginia since the early 1950s. Born in Seattle, Washington to parents Cecil L Thompson and Isabel Stevenson, he grew up in Seattle, Washington and attended the University of Washington before entering the army reserves and serving from February 1941 until October 1945. He then returned to his engineering studies where he met the love of his life Gloria. Married in 1947 he obtained a Mechanical Engineering degree and went to work at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1948. After working at the Grand Coulee Dam and Fort Peck Dam expansion projects they relocated to the Washington DC area. Robert worked for the Army Corp of Engineers for 31 years holding numerous positions before retiring in Jan. 1979. He was a lifelong member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, active in many church functions including singing in the choir for 40 years. His other life passion was model railroading which included the planning and building of passenger and freight cars, many from scratch, and track layouts. He was known for his quiet personality and being a devoted husband, father, and friend. Mr. Thompson is survived by his two sons, Charles Thompson and his wife Rosemary of Virginia Beach, VA and Richard Thompson and his wife Carol of Williamsburg, VA. He is also survived by two grandchildren Ryan Thompson of San Diego, CA and Jessica Thompson of Virginia Beach. A memorial service to celebrate Robert's life will be held on April 2, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church music program.
