He added value to all he touched. A life well lived in service to faith, country, family and alma mater. What parents these Katzen brothers must have had to produce Bernie and Cy. Great friends and colleagues. Men to count on. And to go sailing with, to eat crabs with on a summer day, and to sing The National Anthem with. People with whom to make a life, a community and a bond. May his name be as a blessing for future generations.

Bernie Katzen was one of those special people who gave more to this world than he took from it. I was fortunate to have known this gentle man, even if briefly. We are all diminished by his passing.

I am very sorry to learn of Dr. Bernie's death. I have fond memories of his kindness and intelligence and I cherish my days at "Culmore" and being included in so many Katzen family events!

Dear Katzen Family,
My Mom and Dad, Brother and Sister and I were patients of Dr. Katzen back in the 1940's when he practiced on Minnesota Avenue in Southeast Washington, D.C. He was a kind and caring person who took good care of all us. We hope that he rests in peace and achieves the eternal reward promised all who serve others and do good on this earth. Our prayers are with you.

I learned with great sadness of Dr. Bernie's passing. He was a great man and I feel privileged to have known him. He served his country in wartime with honor and courage, and he and Mildred together served their community for decades, providing the finest primary health care, whether the patient could pay or not. In later years, he and Mildred contributed generously to many worthy causes, while Bernie served to strengthen GW Hospital and the broader Washington community. Most of all, I know he was proud of his family, especially the many accomplishments of his sons and their children. He felt a great sense of gratitude to our nation and the opportunities it made available to him.
Many years ago, I fell ill while serving in the US Foreign Service. Bernie arranged for me to be flown to the US, admitted to Georgetown University hospital and placed under the care of Dr. Sol Katz, one of the leading pulmonary experts in the country at the time. Where many doctors had failed to properly diagnose my condition to that point, Dr. Katz was able to do so within 48 hours and I was on the road to recovery. Bernie closely followed my treatment the entire time I was under Dr. Katz' care.
Bernie's intervention probably saved my life - no less than that. So his passing carries for me special meaning and a deeply felt prayer of thanks and blessings to him, and to those of us who mourn his passing, but celebrate the life of a great and good man.
