Roark,
I remember the fun you generated both at Georgetown Prep and Holy Cross. Our paths diverted as I chose medicine and you chose law. I'm delighted that you led a full life and a life for others.
May you rest in peace!

Roark,
You were a true mentor to me at the SMU Law School. Memories of your guidance and support to the students in the Criminal Justice Clinic stay with me today 40 years later. God speed my old friend.

It was a pleasure taking care of Mr Reed for the last two and a half years. I am grateful for the friendship we developed. I will always remember him as the gentleman he was and I will always cherish his wonderful smile that would light up the darkest day. He once told me I was his angel, now he is mines.
His love for music and dance kept all the nurses at Martha Jefferson house moving and grooving and smiling. We would often have little "sing along" and instantaneously a smile so big would come across his face. All the nurses made sure our dance moves were polished so we could keep up with him on a daily basis :)He will always have hold a special palace in my heart.

Roark and I began our careers at Georgetown at about the same time. I remember him fondly even though the passing of years made our contact less and less frequent. We at Georgetown mourn the loss.

Prof. Reed first opened that door for me at SMU on May 17, 1983. He told me, "hiring you was one of my greatest achievements at SMU Law School!" I worked for him in the Criminal Justice Clinics when he was Director and later our Associate Dean. As I promoted to different departments, he always checked on me to see how my work was going. He was there when my parents passed, my children born, my divorce and when I struggled to get my Bachelor's and Master's degree. He truly cared about his staff and valued them like his own family. Most importantly, he crusaded for legal services to the poor. I started my career in the clinics as a clerk and back as the Clinic Coordinator. Social justice is my passion and I owe it all to Roark Reed for his mentorship. Rest in peace, Roark. We will NEVER forget you. Your words of encouragement are with us everyday! A MIGHTY OAK HAS FALLEN! Roark was a respected educator, brilliant lawyer, mentor, role model, and friend. And he never stopped fighting the good fight! Our lives intersected at SMU Law School where he founded the criminal clinic which, to this day, continues to honor his legacy with its excellent work. May our heavenly Father ease your grief and leave only the cherished memories of his loving ways. And may the angels lead him into paradise.

My mentor and my friend. We taught the Death Penalty Project together and in the process he showed me what it means to be an educator. Rest easy my friend. You will live on through the many lives your life intersected.
