ANNIE SANDERS

ANNIE LAURIE RANKIN SANDERS  (Age 93)  
On September 5, 2016. An active in volunteer, civic, and cultural groups when she lived in Washington, DC, from her birth there on January 14, 1923, off and on, until 2003 when she moved, after her husband's death, to Boise, Idaho to retire near her sons and granddaughters. Mrs. Sanders was the only child of Representative and Mrs. John E. Rankin of Mississippi. She rotated between public schools of Washington, DC and Tupelo, MS through the ninth grade. She then attended Holton Arms School in Washington, DC, where she graduated in 1940. She attended Hollins College in Virginia where she graduated in 1944. She received her MA from George Washington University. From 1944 to 1955 she taught nursery school and first grade at Beauvoir, the lower school for St. Albans Cathedral, as well as the first grade in the public schools of Arlington, VA. She served twice as the president of the Daughters of the House of Representatives and was co-chairman of the Associate Members of the Congressional Club, and later, the Club's Historian and long time Archives Chairman. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the state of Maryland, and later a member of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and the Daughters of the American Revolution in Boise, Idaho. In 1955, she was married at Christ Church, Washington, DC, to then Major John Sanders (West Point 1944) of Center, TX. Their marriage ended with his death in 1992. She is survived by their sons, John Rankin Sanders (Linda Steffes Sanders) of Aspen, CO, and Clayton Burrous Sanders (Beth Lukowski Sanders); and two granddaughters Elizabeth "Libby" Anne Sanders and Sarah Lynn Sanders of Boise, Idaho. She will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery on February 17, 2017.
