Peter Manno Obituary

MANNO PETER MOSES MANNO (Age 79) Of Lake of the Woods, in Locust Grove, Virginia, passed away on December 2, 2007 at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Flora; his five children, Peter, Maria, Paul, Carla and Philip; his grandchildren, Beck and Kara, Olivia and Luke, and Lorenzo; and his children-in-law, Keith, Nicole and Laura. Born November 16, 1928 in New York City, Pete attended La Salle Academy in Manhattan, earned degrees from the City College of New York, New York University, St. John's University, and the University of Virginia. His career in education began on Long Island where as a teacher he met a fellow teacher, Flora, his future wife of 48 years. Continued on as guidance counselor and In 1966, Pete and Flo and their-then two children left New York and their extended families for Virginia, where they eventually settled in Annandale. Here they raised their family which had now grown to five children. Pete served for 22 years as a school principal, at Fairfax Elementary (which he closed); at Clermont Elementary (which he opened); and at Oak View Elementary. He touched the lives of thousands of children and their families, as well as fellow educators, through the work he so loved. After his early retirement due to a series of strokes, Pete and Flo built a house at Lake of the Woods where he enjoyed the quiet beauty and a new set of friends and activities. While social activities became less appealing to him over time due to his declining mobility and speech, he continued to take great pleasure in his new home and its central location as a hub for his children and grandchildren. Besides his work and his family, the bedrock of his life, Pete had a lifelong love of sports and games of all types, especially basketball. Whether as an intense athlete on the playgrounds and courts of New York, a committed and encouraging youth coach, a passionate spectator in the stands, a fan in burgundy and gold on the couch on Sundays, a free-wheeling dealer of cards or a player hoping for "BINGO!", Pete always loved a good game. The family will receive friends and relatives at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA on Friday, December 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a Memorial Service, Saturday December 8 at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The Smile Train ( www.smiletrain.org ), 245 5th Ave, Suite 2201, New York, NY 10016.Memorial contributions may be made to The Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org), 245 5th Ave, Suite 2201, New York, NY 10016.
