Lyle Edgar Engel

1927 - 2014

Lyle Edgar Engel, 86, of Waverly, died Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison.

Lyle was born east of Clarksville on the family farm on December 15, 1927, the son of Rudolph and Vera (Grapp) Engel. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from Clarksville High School in 1946, alongside his high school sweetheart and eventual wife, Charlotte Nordman. The couple was married on April 20, 1947, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Lyle farmed the surrounding area for 10 years. He then owned and operated Lyle's T.V. in Waverly, selling Zenith products, for 30 years. He also worked for IPS (Iowa Public Service) for 11 years, sold and serviced Winpower Generators, and delivered Winnebago motor homes where he made 28 trips to Alaska.

Lyle was a longtime volunteer fireman for the Waverly Fire Department. Lyle had a passion for splitting and burning wood, even up until this past year. He enjoyed making many different kinds of wines out of his home. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Waverly; three daughters; Janice (Norm) Mulder of Shell Rock, Lorie (Ken) Henning of Shell Rock and Kathleen D'Eliseo of Tampa, Fla; two sons; Lee (Jenice) Engel of Clarksville and Glenn (Sanae) Engel of Waverly; 21 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; two brothers; Arlyn (Mavis) Engel and Terry (Jolene) Engel; two sisters: Vera Lee (Richard) Kraft and Elda Kraft. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Marie Gill; great grand twins, Isaac and Tyler Brase; son-in-law, Paul D'Eliseo; brother, Galen Engel; and brother-in-law, John Kraft.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly with Pastor Jon Hennings officiating. Burial will follow in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2014, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
