Richard Martin Obituary

Richard S. Martin, 88, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, formerly of Quincy, died Monday (May 9, 2011) in Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.

Mr. Martin was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Venice, Ill., to Richard and Mildred McMahan Martin. Richard married the love of his life, Doris M. Birtwhistle, on April 6, 1946, in Mishawaka, Ind.

Richard entered the U.S. Navy on June 23, 1943, serving during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge on April 16, 1946. He received his bachelor of science degree in education from Washington University in 1945.

Richard's career at Packaging Corp. of America brought the family to Bloomington, Dixon, Downers Grove and Quincy in llinois, and Marshalltown, Iowa. The couple have lived in Spirit Lake, Iowa, since 1983.

Survivors are his wife, Doris; three daughters, Linda (Charlie) Kraut of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mary (Doug) Ebert of Quincy, and Laurie (Lonnie) Stayton of Elgin; a son, Richard (Martha) Martin of Washington, Mo.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

SERVICES: were at 11 a.m. Thursday in Turner Jennes Funeral Home in Spirit Lake, with interment in St. Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

ARRANGEMENTS: Turner Jenness Funeral Home, 1302 Hill Ave., Spirit Lake, Iowa.
