Doreen Gibson Obituary

Doreen Lindsay Gibson, a 40-year resident of Stow, died just after midnight, Friday morning, April 18, 2013 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was born Doreen Susan Lindsay on Dec 3, 1932, in Dunfermline, Fife County, Scotland. After school, she was a nurse, before switching to a career as a stewardess for British Airways. She married Jerry Gibson, a member of the US Air Force, on Sept. 5, 1956. After three years in London, they moved to the US, where Jerry served another 16 years in the Air Force. The Gibson family moved to Stow in 1967. They were active in the First Parish Church of Stow, and the Stow Conservation Trust. Doreen ran Captain Sawyers bed & breakfast in Booth Bay Harbor, Maine for two years. In 1989 she and Jerry turned their 200-year old farmhouse in Stow into a bed & breakfast, which they called Amerscot (for their American/Scottish union). Jerry died in June 2002, and Doreen continued to run the B&B until April 2008, when she sold it to Viki and Andy Carter. She moved to Faxon Farm in Stow, and the Carters still run Amerscot today. She bravely accepted her diagnosis of Alzheimers in 2009, and lived in Stow until April 2012, when she moved to a health care facility in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She finally succumbed to pneumonia and other infections early Friday morning, with her family by her side. She leaves behind her four children: Colin (living in Clinton); Bruce (Pawleys Island, SC); Lindsay (Cambridge) and Ian (Medfield), and her seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church in Stow at 3pm on Saturday, May 4. Reception will follow at the meeting hall after the service. Donations in Doreens memory are welcome at the Alzheimers Foundation (alz.org).
