One of the best teachers I ever had. He gave me a view of the world that I wouldn´t have today. The haves and have nots, still part of my thought process. Thank you Mr. Sutherland

Don was my "Problems of Democracy " teacher in my senior year at Newton South and advisor to the international club when I was president. He was an engaging teacher and opened my eyes to a world beyond Newton,

I managed to save the paper back book " The Nature of the Non Western World" and after 9/11 I found the book and read the section on the Middle East. Nothing had changed - I did not have to have read the papers for the last 50 years and I could have been current.

Don would give out words of wisdom. He once noted that no matter what you are taking about - you can also make the observation that it is different in the south. When taking about areas that I knew nothing about I would use that phrase "that It is different in the South". It worked well for me ,,

Thank you Don

It was with great sadness I heard about Don's passing. I look upon myself as a lucky person to have known Don for nearly 11 years. We meet each year and I would always bring a pencil and notepad because I wanted to memorialize the vast knowledge of American history I always obtained from Don in our conversations. We didn't always agree about the economy or the political state of U.S. affairs but I would always went home with more food for thought. Until we meet again, Don, rest in peace.

Don was my track coach. I treasure the fact that I was a part of the first Newton South High team to win a league title in any sport. It took some incredible performances in the last meet of the year to accomplish this. We could not do it without coach. I reconnected with him 10 or 15 years ago. We went to a lot of track meets together, drank a lot of beer and ate a lot of good food.

I will always treasure his memory. rest is peace, Coach.

To Don's family and friends:
I remember Mr. Don Sutherland with much fondness.
He was my history (I can't recall the actual name of the course) teacher senior year at Newton South HS.
He we was bemused by my irreverent and, sometimes altered, behavior-hell, it was 1970!
Anyway, his stories, woven around the course material, were something I looked forward to and made what was an awkward time in my life, more bearable.
I can hear him saying: "Mr. Rosenberg, would you care to share with the class what you find so amusing?"
May he rest in peace.

I was blessed as a youth to have some great coaches. The greatest was Don Sutherland. He was thoughtful, caring, smart, humorous, decent and kind. He had a firm yet gentle way to push his students and athletes to be as good as they could be. Newton South High School in the 1970's was a magnificent place to study, learn and grow. Don Sutherland helped make it such a place. He will live in my memory forever.

Donald Sutherland was one of my my teachers senior year at Newton South (1969-1970). The class was titled Geography, but it was more history and world events. Mr. Sutherland challenged me to THINK for myself... not to accept everything I was told but to read, learn and make decisions about whatever I was faced with or being taught. He was very popular with the class and am sure he added to their lives as he did mine. Heaven just inherited a great instructor.
